Epos speakers - no longevity?

Much appreciate the responses.  

Currently running the same source through Tekton speakers and sub.  Sounds outstanding -- no issues.  Makes me completely mental to have expensive gear die after light use and careful handling - especially since they sounded great when they were up.  However, I figured I was purchasing speakers for the long run - not 6 years.

Power spike is an interesting theory but I have speakers connected to amp and use an ac line filter.

This may push me over the edge to purchase a pair of Pro Ac speakers - a friend has them and I have never had an audio experience as fulfilling as listening to them ~ magical.  Just need to win the lottery....

I have older Epos M5 and had M16 and they are built like a tank. No problems and fabulous sound. Seems all subs with electronics eventually have issues. It's a matter of when will they act up. Not so much speakers. I am not thrilled with the newer Epos sound. Their newer soft dome domes have an edge that I never experienced with their metal dome. Usually it's the other way around..

Planed obsolescence seems modern audios not built to last. Much can not be properly repaired and is designed to be binned not rebuilt.

This does seem very odd; I wonder about a possibility. If you had the speakers running from the subwoofer, this may have happened... It is possible that you had a power spike/surge which took out the subwoofer and effected the speakers. This would only be the case if the speakers were connected to the subwoofer output, if the sub has this and you were utilizing it. I cannot think of another scenario in which both would be effected adversely, especially if your other gear is fine. Especially if you had this hook up and they exhibited the anomalies in tandem, then I think this is a strong possibility of the culprit behind the failure. 

This is less likely; Not sure based on the description of the anomaly you are hearing whether this would be a potential cause for the squeaking of the speakers, but if you can access the internals of the speaker it's well worth investigating. From the pic on the website the connections to the drivers may be pressure tabs, I'm not sure of the proper name, but ones which slip over the smaller flat leads of the drivers. If the connection is faulty, i.e. the leads have worked loose, then perhaps it might result in some of the sonic issues you hear. 
If I had the speakers and could access the internals via removing a driver, I would. It may save the speakers. If you find that there is soldered connection and there is a fault, that, too, can be remedied pretty easily. Frankly, from the description of "squeaks" it sounds more like damage to the driver, but it's worth a look-see. 

As usual, this is a "Do at your own risk" proposition. You may wish to contact the company to see what they say. 

Amp is ok - exhibits well known volume control problems but otherwise clean ~~ same speaker issues with a second integrated amp. Subwoofer is dead - power light on but zero sound.  Speakers sound good except for horrible squeaks at low frequencies playing music and especially movies.  Both woofer surrounds on each speaker appear fine and are smooth/no cracks.  Live in the boonies - no reputable repair nearby - probably headed for landfill to my despair.

I can't speak on all their products but I've been using a pair of their 2 way speakers for over 25 years. The last 15 years they've been used every day hooked up to the tv. These seem bullet proof.

Check the woofer surrounds.  Not uncommon for surrounds to break down with time no matter how gently they were used.  Fairly easy fix.
