They are fine and probably an ok buy 1/2 off or on sale. I feel the 226be is a much better speaker for the same required floor space if you can swing the price. They are often on sale or open boxes too.
Thanks for the feedback on those, @james633 ; they are about $1400 off. The 226bes are a bit rich for my blood right now. Also, I am listening near-field in a small room.. |
Audio advice has the 226be grey and white on sale for $2340 each ($4680 a pair). So still about $1600 more than a pair of 126be on sale which is significant but it is really an amazing performer. The bass rolls off pretty early on the 226be and would probably be pretty flat even in a small room. Anyway the 126be sounds real nice but lacks bass extention. I would need subs to really enjoy them. I owned the 228be for about a year and thought they were great with sub and honestly the 226be sounds almost exactly like the 228be. The 126be sounds a bit different than the rest of the Revel Be line. Good in it’s own way if the lack of bass does not bother you or you plan to use subs. you have to click on the different colors to see the different prices per color.

@james633 , I actually do have an ancient M&K sub (that needs upgrading) that I pair with my ancient B&W 805s (that I would like to upgrade). That's a helluva discount on those F226Bes from Audio Advice. . . . I've got the impression from reading reviews on a lot of floor standers that they really favor a larger room and some space between each other and the listener? I don't have that luxury at present . . . I wasn't joking about the near-field. |
There is kipple measurements online for both the 805s and 126be. I will link them below. It has been a long time since I heard the 805s to comment but I have owned speakers from both brands. The revels tend to be smoother and more dynamic as a whole. You might feel like you are missing some highs with the Harmon curve which is a 5db drop in treble over the entire frequency range (just a downward sloping line). I can’t speak to near field on revel. I always sat about 10’ from mine. The drivers are superbly integrated https://www.erinsaudiocorner.com/loudspeakers/revel_m126be/

@bassbuyer , yes, I did buy a pair from MD. |
@bassbuyer , I have been going through a period of mixed feelings. To begin with, I did not want to like them but I found myself impressed in spite of myself. However after putting 100+ hours on them, I hooked my B&Ws back up hoping that the B&Ws would now sound like hammered dogcrap to my ears. But they didn't. Anyway, I kept the Revels, but the thing is, I've been in an extended funk for some time now and I've put very little time in with them. Every night I go to bed and tell myself I am going to change that the next day, but so far I haven't. Anyway, here is the thread I started after they were delivered, but be forewarned that I make no claims whatsoever to be a reviewer:

I can only tell you that I too own B&W 805M's purchased at right around the same time as you did-1994 to maybe 1998-I just remember that my two sons were still young. I will never forget buying them at Progressive Audio on High Street, on tOSU's campus. Back then, Progressive Audio had moderately priced gear downstairs in an old house converted to a store and the uber-expensive gear were in what used to be the upstairs bedrooms. But here is what I am getting at; about ten years later I returned to Progressive Audio-now long out of business-and had a conversation with the lead-salesman Robert (last name long forgotten) about how classic and timeless the 805M's continued to be and how despite having equipment in his own home similar to the high priced gear upstairs, Robert returned again and again to enjoying how great the 805M's sounded at the store. I still own those 805M's and they have not seen the light of day in ten years or so. They have been sitting in the original box. I plan to re-install them in my dedicated listening room soon and I am willing to bet that after some warm up time and loosening up of the surrounds, they will continue to give much enjoyment. You can not strictly do A-B style comparisons to determine which loudspeaker will prompt you to return to your listening room rather than watching TV or whatever else you might end up doing in your spare time. That "magic dust" that for your ears makes you want to just listen to music is elusive. The mistake that virtually all of us make is yearning for something we see that we think might make things better. I "ditched" the 805M's originally thinking I wanted floorstanders that put out more bass and put out a larger wall of sound. I have since moved on repeatedly with new speakers. I love my Devore 0/93's but do they make me want to listen to music more often than with the 805M's? No. |
@bassbuyer , thank you for your kind thoughts I am sure it will get better. @fsonicsmith , at the time I decided to try out new speakers, I was thinking that the R&D over the last 30 years must surely have resulted in a superior sounding product.. Now I am not so sure. The Revels do sound good, but after putting 100 hours on them or so and then listening to the B&Ws, I am not so sure it wasn’t kind of a lateral move. To begin with, I thought that I heard a more articulate liveliness with the Revels. But again, now I am not so sure. I do have more to say about this later.

I’ve never heard those B&Ws. Listened to the 702 S2 and 703 S5 and I preferred the sound of the Revels. I have a small room so I don’t need towers to fill the space with sound. If you like the sound of the B&Ws that’s all that matters in my opinion. As Hans B. Says at the end of every video, enjoy the music. |
