Directionality Explained
I have read it argued against by those who think they know
Here is proof
Paul Speltz Founder of ANTICABLES shares his thoughts about wire directionality. Dear Fellow Audiophiles, As an electronic engineer, I struggled years ago with the idea of wire being directional because it did not fit into any of the electrical models I had learned. It simply did not make sense to me that an alternating music signal should favor a direction in a conductor. One of the great things about our audio hobby is that we are able to hear things well before we can explain them; and just because we can’t explain something, doesn't mean that it is not real.

You claimed annealing could not change the crystal structure. Try to keep things straight.

Interesting. So you think there is an invisible chevron pattern below the surface, but you don't think annealing does anything. You been sharing one too many with Miller I think. The “chevron pattern“ below the surface of the wire - the deformation of the copper atomic structure - would be damn hard to see unless you had Superman’s X-Ray vision. 👀 Furthermore the chevron pattern on the surface of the wire, if that’s even there, which I’m not sure it is, doesn’t necessarily mean anything. So, far we’re not anywhere closer to an explanation than when we started. |

glupson geoffkaitI am beyond proud. Like every parent is when her/his little one finally shows she/he paid attention. |
But only if you are told about this in advance. In all other circumstances, you wouldn't notice a difference. When the directionality is “backwards” there is a loss of resolution, cymbals sound like a spray-can and are truncated, voices are grainy and lack presences, the sound stage is flattened, and bass is less defined. |
An excerpt for the OP article, “While wire directionality is not fully understood, it is clear that because of the wire casting process, the internal grain structure of the conductor has a slight chevron shape, and it is this physical difference that is consistent with which direction the wire sounds better. When the directionality is “backwards” there is a loss of resolution, cymbals sound like a spray-can and are truncated, voices are grainy and lack presences, the sound stage is flattened, and bass is less defined. When the wire directionality is correct, the music is more relaxed, resolving, delineated, more present, open, and believable.” >>>>While that doesn’t really explain the mechanism, the operational details, for what is happening to the signal, it does a good job explaining what the sonic effects of directionality are. |
Yes Sir! Is why I kept saying follow them arrow(s), right? An' if yer h'aint got those, follow the writing. Sharp! No Nobel Price needed, just follow simple instruction! Right there on that cable, I do... and what will follow? Peace 🕊 of mind! OMMMM... OMMMM 🙏 T' works for me, yes, does. Wanna come check it out? 🤔 💐 Welcome! 👍 M. 🇿🇦 |
“If I could explain it to the average dude or dudette they wouldn’t have given me the Nobel prize.” “People would be generally better off if they believed in too much instead of too little.” When I come here I keep a journal mostly of all the good jokes so I can show them to people in the future where I come from. They say they like them a lot since there are no audio forums in the future and certainly not jokes of this caliber. I had to get back on a few of my medications I had forgotten about. |
Ah, - and then what about 'reverse-burnin' !?! And then revers burn-in yet AGAIN?!?... 🤔 Them charges might get so highly confused, an' make that cable sound no good then either way, eh? 😢 What say y'all? Will this EVER come to any conclusion, (with or without a' Sachertort'n, ge hörst, jetz' sag a mal ?) 🤔 🎂 now please...! 😉 M. 🇿🇦 |
So what differences do people hear when cables are in the preferred direction versus the opposite? For an audible difference the cable must be imparting some specific signature, be it distortion, attenuation or or some other characteristic. Whether it is measurable or otherwise quantifiable is arbitrary. I’m willing to accept that there is a qualitative difference that some people are capable of detecting. Since the charge moving through the cable is variable with the audio signal, only one side of that signal is moving charge in the preferred direction. Therefore, whatever sonic signature is imparted to the signal, it is acting differently on the positive part of the waveform than the negative part. If the cable is reversed then the characteristic signature is inverted and the opposite polarity of the waveform is moving charge in the preferred direction. So if the cable is directional then in order to hear it, one would need to be able to differentiate between the cable’s effect on the positive part of the signal versus the negative part. Has anyone done the experiment of listening to a system in all 4 configurations? Cable direction A - non-inverted Cable direction A - inverted Cable direction B - non-inverted Cable direction B - inverted Somebody must have tried this, right? |
It seems that it works. I just ordered one original King to celebrate geoffkait's 22000 and my 5000. And you guys thought I was kidding. Now that bride and groom, have given themselves to each other by solemn vows, with the joining of hands and the giving and receiving of rings, I pronounce that they are husband and wife, in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. You may now kiss the bride |
How wonderful it must be to visit Vienna! I’ve not had the pleasure. Yes, I see they no longer carry the Mozart Edition. Although I am a fan of himbeere (indeed raspberry) and less intrigued by schwarze orange, I believe an original king is in my future in honor of two such momentous occasions. Also, in the spirit of this forum, I shall listen to ’Wolfer’ whilst I enjoy it. On second thought, might as well get a piccolo of the feine himbeere to try... |
thecarpathian, I am not sure they still offer Mozart edition, at least it was not available in their caffe in the summer of 2019. However, rest assured that other ones are as good, The original being my favorite, then orange, and then himbeer (I think it is raspberry in English, but am not sure). On a regular day, you can order them for delivery even overseas (Sacher does that, too). I am not sure if current situation changed anything. It is worth trying. If you ever get a chance, get a large cake, not single portion (mignon). For some reason, it is more marzipanny. I just invented that word, though. As far as desserts go, it is as far as you can get from Fat Bottomed Girl’s Cupcakes. EDIT: It seems that it works. I just ordered one original King to celebrate geoffkait's 22000 and my 5000. And you guys thought I was kidding. |
Actually the sky is black. The blue color comes from the sun. But oh! wait. The color of the sun is not blue. Our sun is actually classified as "yellow" due to its temperature. Some people think our sun is actually more "green" than "yellow". Some would argue that our sun color is "white" since it has a wide range of color from red to blue. Damn I am an expert of the Sun thanks to online :-) The sky is black The sun is white Up is the head In my black a$$ |
Here's something more down to earth although I am sure there'll be some who will have their own mental issues. Snake Oil and the Velocity of Propagationhttps://positive-feedback.com/audio-discourse/snake-oil-and-the-velocity-of-propagation/ |
