I see there have been a couple of previous posts regarding the 50A or hearing it at the last RMAF, but has anyone actually purchased the 50A? Any thoughts?
I've talked to Kara about the Aries 845, but due to my rather large listening room she suggested that the 50A has a little more authority in the bass and mid-bass and is equally as sweet. I don't know, there's really something special about those 845 tubes.
I have met Kara on several occasions. She is one of the most intelligent, friendly and passionate people I have ever met. And her products reflect her passion and love of recorded music.
Thanks all...and Lula I hope you will eventually get an answer, although I don't think it will be on this thread.
I apologize for the direction that this thread took. I am appreciative that someone, anyone, took the time to reply to my question.
Shredder, I believe the only complete review I've read, besides the snippets on the DH site, is Garrett Hongo's. I'm somewhat surprise there's not more chatter on Audiogon about the 50A. I believe it has been available for at least a year now.
I was interested in the 50A after reading Roger Gordon's review of the deHavilland Aries 845 and the Merlin VSM-MXe. I have Merlins and I've always loved the sound of the 845, but to reiterate my room is large and even Kara mentioned the Aries 845 may not cut it.
I guess I'll have to make a road trip to Washington and compare the two amps myself.
You are correct. Anytime a dealer/manufactures makes any statement smart readers should weigh the statements made.
In addition since Audiogon is a place where people sell their used gear even though they are not dealers/manufactures, readers should be skeptical of these posts as well.
The room at the RMAF where Dpe heard the 50A's was the deHavilland and Sounds Real Audio room so I don't think it is "evil" to jump in here with a little knowledge.
>>06-10-10: Rubinken Audiofeil- You are quick to criticize others. Why do you not disclose that YOU are a dealer/tradesperson yourself? (Who does not carry Dehavilland)<<
Why would I disclose that I do NOT carry DeHavilland?
I know Jim of Sounds Real quite well. I do believe that by using the name of his business (Sounds Real Audio) as his user name, Jim did make a disclosure of his interest. And, it is not like Dpe asked about Spectron and Jim told him to look at DH. Dpe asked about two DH amps and Jim told him about the two DH amps (and btw recommended the less expensive one). Who better to comment than a DH dealer? Not a fair criticism IMHO.
I have heard both the 845 and 50a. In fact, a pair of 50a's (from Sounds Real) spent three weeks in my system. I absolutely love the 50a, best midrange I have ever heard. Very good bass control for such a low powered amp. Amazing soundstage both in terms of width and especially depth. 3-d imaging. Very natural musical sound. Pure joy to listen to.
After agonizing over the decision, I did not purchase the amps. I love them and may end up with them at some point in time. However, they were just not quite up to powering my Aerial Model 9s, which require a ton of juice (i.e. 4 bass drivers). For the 50a's to really make sense, I would need to get new speakers and was not quite up for that. The fact that the 50a's came close to matching with the Aerials is a real testament to the amps.
As to reviews, there is a copy of one on the DH site.
I think you would much prefer the 50A's, not just because of their bass but the entire range. Very rich and textured with single ended type voices and instruments and sound stage and focus and natural sound and no grain and no glare and non fatiguing and ...........
