Jeff, count me in as a prospective member. I actually live in Falls Church City, blocks from your new location. I'm excited to have you going B&M, and to have you in FCC. I wonder if you can capitalize on proximity of CD Cellar, that just opened a vinyl room upstairs this year to go with CD rooms in basement of their Rt. 7 location. They had 300 people in line when their door opened on Record Store Day this spring.
Looking forward to this group coming together,
Bob Clarke

Count me in as someone interested in joining some of my fellow DC-area audiophiles someday (I'm in Baltimore).

I'm near Annapolis MD and am interested. |

Yes, it was fun before. We should do it again. Tom |

Gentlemen, I am not the rep. However, I was delighted to be involved and show off our new power cords which performed ridiculously well in the room. However, the credit belongs to Ming Su who is the rep. He also has a relationship with Shroeder and JC Verdier as well. The designers are a couple of older Japanese fellows who give Ming the cabinet plans, etc. It is very, very custom but Ming has cabinet makers here in the states to create a turn-key system for you. My weekend with Dr. Doug Hurburt and Ming was one to remember and we will partner again in 2011. Tim Stinson/ Luminous Audio |

YEs.
Is GOTO the company that made the horn speaker system there? I have been trying to figure that out. I deduced the gentleman in the room was the designer, but I was not able to identify the company that made it. I assumed it was a custom design and not one that is mass produced.
IS Luminous Audio the distributor of the gear used in that system, perhaps? |
Mapman, I think that you are referring to the room with the GOTO custom horn in the JC Verdier, Dynamic Sounds and Luminous Audio room on the first floor? The one with wooden horn, right? |
Thanks for the kind words from all! With approximately 400 attendees the plan is to move ahead with next years event. The venue was great and now the participants know that they need to be prepared to bring room treatments next year for optimal sound. Let me know if you think of another venue where we can expand slightly and still retain quality. Good listening to all! |
The systems that caught my ear that I spent time listening to were the JC Verdier/Dynamic Sounds room with the custom horns (the Dynamic Sounds phono pre-amp was dead quiet and most dynamic even on this highly revealing rig), the Cathedral speakers, the room demoing Magico V3 and comparable YG aCOUSTICS, AND United Audio with their mbl and RTR setup (which was good but not set up as well as their showroom), and the little Jolida integrated running the Nola monitors, which was the best sound value of the show that I could see.
The Joseph Audio monitors running off the Manley gear also sounded quite good and garnered a lot of attention albeit in a fairly small room. |
cannot believe that after waiting for the event to arrive, I had to fly to Dallas for the delivery of our very first grandchild, so we missed the entire event. Even got married at the Rockville Mansion, so it was personal for me. Would love to support a return to there, or anywhere next year.
Did anyone put together a review of their listening opinions on who really shined, what was truly new, overall impressions of the crowds/attendance, factory response, etc.? I would greatly appreciate being able to read. Go Next Year. !!!!! |
Capital Audio Fest was a very nice event. I don't see how they made any money, but I hope they do it again.
The venue was gorgeous and really helped add a lot of ambiance to the overall experience. In the room to the left rear of teh first floor with the big SOTA horn system, I felt a bit trasported back 100 years or so but with a fantastic 21st century system leveraging the best of old and new in one place.
The box with free records for attendees was a very nice touch! I could have spent a whole day browsing through the vinyl collection titles available for sale alone.
The sound of the systems set ranged mostly from very good to quite stellar. There were some good audio values to be found there to boot. Nicely done! |

Capital Audio Fest photos can be found here |
Thoroughly enjoyed myself. Long time over due. A little hot upstairs, but looking forward to next year. Wheres the photos?? |
To all of our Washington DC Audio Society members...
If you did not already know, the Capital Audiofest (http://www.capitalaudiofest.com/p1.html) is being held in Rockville, MD from 6/11 - 6/13. This is the first show in the DC area in a long time and it would be great to have this as an annual event. So if you can make it, please try to attend. This should be a fun event. Besides the product demonstrations, there will be live music and a swap meet.
If anyone wants to take picture and blog about this, we can post this to the club website (http://metrodcaudiosociety.blogspot.com/).

Reminder....DC Audio Society meeting is this Saturday, Jan 30th. Check the Society Website for more info: http://www.metrodcaudiosociety.blogspot.com/. |
Hey guys,
I wanted to give a heads up - the Head-Fi community is planning another meet on March 21 for anybody who is interested - the relevant link is here http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f24/va-md-washington-dc-march-21-2010-a-464433/.
Cheers, Aman |

Update on Metro Washington DC Audio Society January 30th Meeting
Per the previous notice, Zu Audio will be the feature presenter on the January 30th meeting of the Metro Washington DC Audio Society at Jeff Foxs house at 7105 Maybury Court, Falls Church, VA 22046. Ron, from Zu will be demonstrating Zus new Essence speaker, plus some other TBD goodies.
The formal meeting will take place at 3:00 pm. Also, at the start of the meeting, Gary Gill will give a short address on the upcoming local audio show called the Capital Audiofest (http://capitalaudiofest.com/).
In addition to the formal meeting, Ron will provide a more informal on-going demonstration of the Zus Essence speaker from 1 pm to 5 pm on the 20th. So if you cannot make it at 3 pm, come on by at another time. Ron, will be here early if you want to schedule a one-on-one session in the morning.
Also, there will be a BONUS event! Since Zu Audios approach to speaker design is to replicate the sound of a live event, we thought it would be fun to go to a local concert on the evening of January 29th. The concert is The Kennedys at Jammin Java in Vienna (http://jamminjava.com/home/events/the-kennedys-maura-kennedys-solo-cd-release). The concert is at 7 pm and advanced tickets can be purchased at the above website.
We want to expand the music loving community, so please bring a newbie if you can significant other, son, daughter, nephew, or a neighbor. Please note that we are asking anyone who wants to attend the Audio Society meeting to RSVP to jeff@commandav.com. |
Update... Last post should have said January Meeting, not December. |
December Meeting of the Metro DC Audio Society
The next Metro-DC Audio Society meeting will be on Saturday, January 30th in Falls Church, VA. The time is TBD at this point, so please check the Societys Website (http://metrodcaudiosociety.blogspot.com/) for an update. The meeting will be at Jeff Foxs house at 7105 Maybury Court, Falls Church, VA 22046.
For the January meeting, our host will be Zu Audio (www.zuaudio.com). This promises to be a fun day of music listening to the Essence loudspeaker. This speaker has received a lot of great press and should be interesting to listen to. Ron, from Zu, hopes to provide a sneak peak/listen to some other Zu goodies in the works. Who knows
this meeting may be a premiere from something new and exciting from the folks at Zu.
Zus preferred format is to have an extended open house on the 30th during which we will swap out solid state and tube gear to really get a feel for the Essence speakers. Also, there will also be a more formal regular club type meeting. Again, stayed tuned for an update on times.
Finally, we were thinking about catching a live show at a local club on the 29th or 30th if people are interested. Because the Zu sound is all about a live performance, this could be the ultimate A-B test. Again, stay-tuned.
Please contact either Jeff (jeff@commandav.com) or Ron (ron@zuaudio.com) to reserve a space. |
Went to the Tape Project at United Home Audio in Anapolis Junction, MD today and am happy to say its the real deal! The system sounded great and look forward to the next event! |
Wow! Great to see some movement with audio in the DC area. Two events on the same day! Sorry that I can only make one, so will be at the Tape Show. www.capitalaudiofest.com |
On December 5th Paul Stubblebine from The Tape Project will be in Maryland visiting UHA (United Home Audio). I spoke with the people from UHA today and there is interest from people in various states on the east coast. Anyone can attend if interested. |
This is only tangentially related, but if anybody is interested, a few of us Head-Fi folks have organized a headphone meet this weekend at the Clarendon Myer-Emco in Arlington - tons of headphone gear if anyone is curious to hear what the best of the best in headphones has to offer. |
Just found this thread yesterday after years of browsing A'gon. I will check back for future meetings. Great idea! |

Just wanted to let your members know that the 1st annual Capital Audiofest is planned for June 11-13, 2010 at the Glenview Mansion in Rockville, MD. The Website is minimal at the moment but is WWW.Capitalaudiofest.com
Is there any reason you are setting shoot out limitations on pricing? What about age of the gear? |

Reminder: Next DC Club meeting is Saturday February 16th at 4 pm. If anyone who plans to attending the meeting and as a VPI Scout or Scoutmaster that he/she is willing to bring to the meeting, please let me know. Vihn Vu has a new vibration platform for those turntables and will bring it if there is a turntable available.
Also, someone asked if they could bring alcohol (wine) to share. The answer is yes (except for moonshine) because Command Performance will not be providing liquor. At this meeting, I would like to see if people are willing to pay some nominal initial dues to cover food and drinks for future meetings. |
UPDATE ON FEBRURAY MEETING GEAR AND AGENDA Here is an update as to what Vinh Vu of Norvinz (http://www.norvinz.com/) will be bringing to the meeting:
1) Merrill-Scillia MS2 TT
2) Sanders ESL amp and line preamp, Sanders phono preamp
3) TBI new entry-level system
4) Innersound Isis with an active crossover/bass amp ( the old Isis was passive). As the new Sanders models 10a and 11a are still in production for second quarter release, he will not be able to bring either of those speakers. The 11a is based on Innersound Isis and according to Vinh, You will get the essence of the sound but not quite the same speakers. There are two differences: the 11a will have a remote crossover amp with which you can adjust the mid range AND bass while the old Innersound does not have a remote and only has the bass control. The second difference is the looks, with the 11a having a modular construction with wood finish sides and laminated aluminum backs. According to Vinh, I think these are not major differences and if they like the Isis the 11a will only be better.
5) Vibration demo w/ Gingko products. The Gingko vibration demo will have 2 identical accelerometers mounted on the shelf and the platform to show the difference in vibration on and off the platform in real time. If anyone has a VPI Scout or Scoutmaster and wants to bring it to the meeting, then Vinh will demonstrate the new Cloud Nine product. If you have a VPI and are willing to bring it, please email me at jeff@commandav.com.
This should be a great meeting.
