Has anyone seen this?

Maybe he would accept my original Sony Walkman in trade, the one with the blue leather case. It's in very good condition and more or less changed the future of the world, so I would think it's worth at least $1 MM?

Can anyone else recall a story like this?

What is the most ridiculous offer you have ever seen?
cwlondon
Yeah I saw that ad also.. actually wouldn't mind checking out the ESS speakers. But you can keep the SAE.. had one we used for a PA amp.. that's all it was good for.. My Forte 1a mopped the floor with it.
AND---Not so far from home;meaning,here---A guy has a 15/18 year old former top pre. Nowadays they go for 1k--he is asking six times the price.---Feeling stupid??? ---I don't know about the free shipping, tho.
The Seller states that he would consider an offer of 10% of the asking price. Apparently, he had listed the same equipment for $15K previously. The Seller demands payment through PayPal but evidently he is unaware that PayPal will automatically freeze his account should anyone transfer funds in the amount of $10K, or more. It's likely, given his low feedback, that they would not release the funds to him for 6 months. This period of time eliminates the possibility of a chargeback from the Buyers credit-card company, which would leave PayPal holding the bag if they paid-out the cash to the Seller before-hand. Great sales effort on the Sellers part but it's likely he is in for a PayPal surprise.
That offer has been on eBay for quite some time. Oh well, it's his money he's wasting (listing fees).
And only $3K to ship that load of crap! Obviously he subscribes to the "bigger fool" theory.
you can fool all of the people some of the time
you can fool some of the people all of the time
and in marketing that is all that matters
At his asking price, he is INCLUDING all of the Monster Cables. That alone makes it very tempting.
What an unmitigated crock of shiite! Did you happen to notice the sophisticated interweaving of power cords/interconnects and the adjustment of the graphic EQ(set for maximum enjoyment of 60Hz hum and EMI hash)? Even equipped with a Fisher CD player. How apropos that it should come from, 'Painsville'.
excellent entertainment. what's he smoking?

Yes, that's definitely the best laugh of the day.

A lot of people seem to equate rarity with value, especially a lot of eBay sellers. They don't realize that it takes rarity + desirability to create a high value for an older item.

As an antique radio collector, I see that frequently. People offer ordinary 1930's and 1940's consoles, worth perhaps $75 if you can find someone who would want them, and ask $1K to 5K. My observation has been that probably 98% of older collectables are worth far less than most non-collectors (of that type of item) would expect, while perhaps 2% are worth vastly more, because they are BOTH rare and really special in some way.

I also noted with bemusement his statement that "this system is for anyone who wants to experience music at its very best."

BTW, your link wasn't done quite correctly -- I found the item simply by searching at eBay on its item number, 130287738445.
