Quad 57's have a following when nicely restored. I have various Altec's but I will sell those before I part with my two pairs of 57's!
Best Vintage Speakers for Classical & Jazz music
I'm currently using the original Wharfedale W60s/ sand filled speakers with my McIntosh 1700 receiver, Empire 208 turntable, 98 original tonearm & a Empire 2000-mkIII Cartridge with a Shibata stylus. I must admit darn good.
I am thinking of buying the Altec Valencia speaker. Any other choices you would recommend.
@jasonbourne71 which Altec's do you own? |
@pdreher : Bolero's, Santana 1's, Segovia's and Stonehenge 1's. Previously had Valencia's. |
What do you consider vintage - age or popularity? I'm a big fan of the Valencia speakers but one of my favorite "vintage" speaker for acoustic music is the Shahinian Obelisk. Properly placed in the proper room there are few speakers that will reproduce a live performance soundstage as accurately. IMO. The disadvantage is said "Properly placed in the proper room." For all around listening I like any classic JBL monitor using constant directivity horns. I had a pair of L200 T3s in my living room for years, which were the residential (cheaper) version of the 4425 studio monitors and featured the (in)famous baby butt cheeks (or Dolly Partons) wave guides. They are large and have low WAF but they are easy to drive, full range and just sound great. |
