Approx. 95% of my entire audio system is made up of used equipment.
swa- I understand your situation. My advice is to identify Dealers who are in your vicinity and sell the brands you own and ask for quotes on consultation services for optimal set-up for your components. It sounds like you believe you own high quality pieces, but you do not yet have the listening experience you expect after all your attempts. |
Just to clarify, are you looking for an A/V "consultant" or are you asking for our advice? I've done plenty of home theater set ups for myself, from large projection systems using old 3 gun CRTs to more modern types, and did substantial sound systems with them, several using multiple tube amps. Though I'm very much about tubes in my two channel audio systems, they generate a lot of heat, and in my estimation, are unnecessary for home theater, unless you are planning to use some of that gear for audio only purposes. One bonus about home video is that there really was trickle down- when I started messing with high end video in the early '90s, it was beaucoup pricey for top tier gear. A Faroudja line doubler/quadrupler was close to 20k dollars, now it is a cheap chip you can find in a box store Blu player. I'm not up to speed on the latest high end projection systems- when we moved, I got rid of all the projection stuff, racks and ancillaries- gave them to a few friends-- and installed a more modest system with a flat screen here, in a smaller abode. Great image in a dark room. I still use basic components, i.e. pre-pro, rather than AV receiver and basic multichannel power amp (a McI, as it happens) along with 5.1--with a Rhythmik subwoofer. I have not bothered to set up an Atmos system. In my experience, most people used to upgrade their television systems before they crapped out, but for video, I'd be concerned about useful life, whether there are parts available (I remember replacing the bulb in one more modern unit back in the aughts) and I've encountered manufacturers of modern flat screens that do not stock critical replacement parts for stuff that is barely out of warranty. So, I'd say you can more safely do the "audio for video" used, but look to new/demo with warranty for the display/projector from a reputable vendor. It might also be valuable for you to see a few higher end set ups -- you are near enough to the D.C./Philly/NYC metroplex to find some high end dealers who would let you see a demo of their systems. A lot of money and profit can go into the accoutrements of the "theatre" aspect- construction of the inner shell, acoustics, seating, (and flooring if auditorium type seating), along with hiding the gear if you are after a certain aesthetic. That's also where consultants can make money. Have fun. |
Not sure if you have a budget. Tell you what I have which I like very much , you''d be in about 20-22 grand. Samsung QLED series 8 flatscreen , Costco. Mine is 65" under $1500. Samsung metal sound bar with subwoofer Dolby Atmos about $350. Pioneer 9 channel Dolby Atmos receiver 125 wpc into 6 ohms. Klipsich Atmos surround speaker system 9.2 channel. Comes with 4 satellite speakers fire up and out so 2 ch each and lg subwoofer. Comes with speaker wire but for the rear speakers I recommend heavier duty cables for the floor run to them.Sony 4K blue ray player under $200. Those items purchased new. For stereo McIntosh MA7900 integrated amp , purchased used $5,700. McIntosh MR71 tube FM tuner , best I've ever heard. Look for one that's been professionally gone thru , recapped , aligned , etc.about $1500. I run a small fan behind them to keep them cool the tuner sits atop the amp. Denon DCD-A110 SACD player purchased new 2 years ago for $3,500 but now find a used one for about $2,300 and start collecting SACD's. It does a fabulous job on Redbooks too. Also have an old Pioneer blue ray player with 2 ch. Burr Brown audio outputs hooked to the Mac for concert video's , just amazing. Pick one up or the like on Ebay for $200 or less. My living room is on the smallish side so largest speakers that fit well are my JBL L-100T's. Purchased new in 1986 and have been refoamed. The tweeters are a bit hot so upgraded crossovers installed from the Crossover Chef who advertises on Ebay and great. Pick up a set for about $2,000 or less.If you had the room a nice upgrade to a larger size speaker would be the JBL L300 or the studio monitor equivalent JBL 4333. Look for speakers with the original cones and speakers. Speaker wire I used Audio Quest Rocket 11 for 8' they're about $300. Hope this helps. |

sounds like you have a budget to work with a dealer/professional audio installer. For this much money, you can buy new too. The benefit is the return policy, for 30-60 days you can return it no questions asked, You can see a lot of speakers here https://speakerchoices.com/ but I sure don’t have the confidence to make any suggestions for you in your price range. |
Consider getting a used Trinnov AL16; the DSP and Room correction are top-notch. I have one I bought used a few years back, my speakers are a collection of Wilson Audio, some new, some used, and JBL in the ceiling. I have gone from Monoblocks for the LCR and Multi-ch from the effects. The trinnov does fantastic things with voicing on each of the speakers. The bass management is incredible. I use four subs. |
