Adding An Impulse Noise Reduction Device

Hello all.  I have 2 impulse noise reduction devices I would like to integrate in my audio system.  I have both the SAE 5000a and Burwen Research TNE 7000a units.  Currently my system is set up with a Yamaha DSP A1 integrated amp (using it just as a preamp through the preamp out ports) which is connected to a DBX 3BX DS and goes to a Sansui B-2101 stereo power amp.

Where in line should I insert these devices (before or after the DBX 3BX DS)?  I'm sure some people will cringe with this especially if I use both noise reduction devices (I understand the SAE works best with large pops and the Burwen Research works better removing snaps and crackles).  And I do clean my records with a VPI RCM and do my best to remove static with both a Zerostat 3 gun and an antistatic record cleaning arm.  However, I do have some records with pops, clicks and crackle.

My thought is to put the noise reduction devices before the DBX unit.  This way, the impact restoration part will act more on the music.

If you must, I would try it either way. It’s possible that the DBX’s increased DR might make it easier for the SAE or Burwen to detect the pops. The Burwen has an input sensitivity control, IIRC.

But really, neither of these units is going to solve your problem. As Ralph at Atma-Sphere often points out, the origin of many of these pops and clicks is really overload in the phono preamp.
That's interesting - I never thought of that. So what is being suggested is a better preamp phono stage could reduce pops and clicks?

I have placed the two units in line prior to getting the dbx unit. The SAE does remove large pops and the Burwen does remove some crackle (although there are times when it introduces more noise - I think it has to be recapped).
