Are "good" cables needed for vintage system?
If you are somewhat handy you can check out the many DIY cables out there and really get the most for your dollar. I have made a few for way under $100- and they sound almost as good as cables that I spent $500- on.
Room size
Your room is close to my listening room, 24x14 w/ vaulted ceiling. Mating the speaker to the room is the best way to start building a sytem. My first speaker was Vandersteen 2C which was ok but a little too big to really breath and bloom in this s...
Best Live Recording on LP
If you like the Blues, "The London Muddy Waters Sessions" on Chess is a classic. Not only is it well recorded, the music is Muddy at his best. A gifted artist at his peak, it doesn't get any better than this.
How far, how much?
You are going to have to give us more info as to your likes vs dislikes. Are you looking for something a little laid back or right in your face. Do you like big bass or sacrifice some bottom to get a smaller, tighter package. Do you want new with ...
Which wood and design for diy monitor stands?
If I was using wood, I would build it as a box, close to the width x depth of the speaker base so it could be filled with sand or shot. A good 3/4" cabinet grade plywood or mdf would be my choice. It is more stable than 3/4" board stock, less like...
Steam cleaning records 2
As TVAD stated the risk is minimalIf your house is more then 20 years old, chances are that your drinking water is flowing through hundreds of leaded solder fittings on its way to your internal organs. Or, if you live anywhere near a city, the air...
Inexpensive high efficiency bookshelf speakers
I have heard a pair of Focal 706v at a friends home and frankly, I was stunned at what I was hearing. They were powered by a Cambridge Audio integrated and an Oppo player. Nothing fancy. The first word that comes to mind is dynamic, the kind of au...
Tripods as turntable or component base?
You could have listened to a couple of great albums in the time you spent bouncing that around. Either you have a lot more time on your hands than I do or I am missing something. With all due respect.
Sony CDP X77ES- Sled sticking
I thought I read that the lasers were a tough find a few years ago. Too bad. I don't think this is a motor issue, it seem to be running fine, is there a belt that moves the sled in and out? It seems as though a belt may be slipping somewhere.
ruined a phillips screw, any inspired solution?
Philips screws suck, especially soft zinc and stainless. . Replace the first chance you get with allen screws or Robertson (star) and you will never have a problem. Ever see a philips screw on a good tonearm or other sensitive piece of equipment?
alon model 5 mk 2
Pardon the hijack- does anyone remember the smaller set of speakers that Carl had set up at CES this year. I know he had the big Vipers but he also had a very nice sounding set of, I believe, monitors or small floorstanders that sounded fabulous.B...
What do you put your bookshelves on?
I would blu tak 3 or 4 brass footers to the bottom of the speakers to keep them from resonating throughout whatever you are placing them on. Similar to what you would do with floorstanders. It makes an incredible difference in the sound quality of...
Used speakers: Cleaning tips?
Be very careful using the automotive type cleansers and compounds. Many are rubbing compounds that break down the actual finish and stain and can make a mess of your finish in short order. I would only use them in a severely oxidized finish were p...
Steam cleaning records 2
Most steamers have a pressure relief valve in the cap that allows steam to escape at a certain pressure to avoid the tank from exploding. There is a thermostat in these machines that keeps the steam up to, but not over a certain pressure/temperatu...
A question of bass... Several actually.
My problem is that I have things dialed in nice with my digital front end and then when I change to analog I have to lower the gain on the sub.
