XLR vs RCA
"12-24-14: MilpaiI will repeat again and again, from my experience.XLR will provide the "gain" that you need when used with a system that has passive preamp."I don't see how that's true. Gain varies from component to component. Also, you can get g...
Would vinyl even be invented today?
"I'm not sure about that. From what I see at record stores it seems about 95% of record sales are people who have systems that would be better used for CD playback."I wasn't guessing on that. It really happened. For a long time audiophiles were pu...
Would vinyl even be invented today?
"Well, let's look at the market for sound reproduction and make an educated, clean-sheet-of-paper guess. Hi-res digital, available as either download, stream, or SACD/DVD audio is out there already. It offers the essentially "perfect sound forever...
Finally "HiFi" streaming - comments on Tidal???
Have you compared Tidal to the same music on CD, SACD and DVD-A?
XLR vs RCA
"It seems that the majority of termination requests we receive at TARA Labs are for balanced (XLR) lines."Are all of your cables balanced or are you just putting XLR connectors on single ended cables?
Soundstage - when wide is too wide

"12-21-14: Onhwy61Play a mono recording of vocalist with sparse accompaniment. You will need to adjust your system to get a tight center image on the voice. If you then play the guitar music and it still has an unrealistically big sonic image, the...
Control volume at speaker cable level for A/B??
A better option would be for you to get a cheap spl meter and mark the volume positions on your preamp where both speakers are at the same level. Using a switchbox will definitely effect how the system sounds. You won't have A/B switching doing it...

"12-21-14: Will62How they sound in a showroom will not be representative of how they sound at home. I bought the Klipsch Heresey's back in the 1980' after listening to them in the store. Got them home and they definitely didn't sound right at all....
Classe CA-201 Issue
Assuming that all the fuses are OK and there is no visible internal damage since you took the unit in for service, Here's a few things you can try.Swap all speaker, IC and PC's connected to the amp with something else to confirm that you don't hav...

I was just suggesting that you listen to speakers before you buy them. I never said that you should go out and buy and return a bunch of speakers. As far as using cables to fix the speakers you buy, all I can say to that one is, you'll see. Its li...

"12-21-14: Will62Zd542. Regarding the break in of speakers. Seems to me that a speaker will break in better if music containing a wide variety of frequencies is used. Thus not all music is suited for breaking in a speaker properly."A speaker is ei...

"I'm going to spend less than $500 for a pair of bookshelf speakers. I know the kind of sound that I desire in a speaker and have narrowed my choices down to around 5 models that possess these traits based upon both professional reviews and user r...
Define power hungry...B&W speakers
Here's one more example for you that may help in your selection. You picked your B&W's for a reason. On paper, your CDM 1NT's look like countless other small speakers. You can find another pair of speakers of a similar design and specs, and fo...
Define power hungry...B&W speakers
I know exactly what you are looking for when you're asking for amp specs that you can use to make a decision. It definitely makes sense, but it's not going to happen. I'll give you a couple of examples of why that is. One of the more popular specs...
