Audio Research VT100, MKii and MKiii
One consideration is the tube biasing procedure. The MK III is quite straight forward with only one simple adjustment for each pair of output tubes. The MK II is much more complex and takes quite a bit more time as the process is iterative.
Ever so slight platter wobble
What is the platter made of? The fact that the bottom of the platter is uneven may be fine as long as the top runs true (especially if the platter is massive and thick. The fact that the bearing has play is more serious. Have you looked underneath...
Experience with high end fuses????
Rodman,Did you try replacing the original fuses to see if the improvement went away? I believe you heard a difference but am curious if it could be attributed to the contacts, as opposed to the fuses. If not, and if you still have the original fus...
The Cyclicality of Black Vs Silver
It would be interesting to find out from ARC what the current ratio of black to silver sales are and if that has changed over the years.
Help building a small room with audio
Bentx2, I believe that if you leave a foot of space above the side and rear walls, and cover only the inside of the walls with drywall, the bass will move right through and not magnify the modes in your nearly square room. You can stuff insulation...
Vandersteen 5A dynamics and bass response.
By the way, I forgot to mention that my previous listening room was 18' W, 34' L and had a cathedral ceiling which peaked at 12'H, and was also open into a large entry/stairwell and a hallway at the rear. I had the 5As in this room for several yea...
Vandersteen 5A dynamics and bass response.
Don't under estimate the capability of the vandy subs. With push/pull cones and over 400 watt ss amps per side, they can push a lot of air effortlessly. Plus, the quality of the bass achievable with the compensation controls coupled with the abili...
Help building a small room with audio
Bentx2,I recently built a dedicated room in a basement which had block walls and a concrete floor similar to yours. One of the walls had existing openings over the blocks between the joists. At the start of the project I carefully measured the fre...
Replacement for Vandersteen 2C
Livin,I have an office system in a room only slightly larger than yours (15 x 11). The speakers are Vandy 2Cis and I have them centered on the long wall about 18" out and 7 ft. apart. They work wonderfully well with a good sound stage and excellen...
Previous ref 3 owners, what's in your system now
Kclone,I guess it all depends on what you have been exposed to. Those of us that dialog about this speaker have just shortend the name. Its kind of like referring to a "747" (Boeing) or a "350" (Chevy) or "911" (Date). I can be troublesome as you ...

Acoustic treatment for corners.
Mmakshak,If the doorway has a door, you might try closing it. I assume not from your posts. You might also try toeing the speakers in slightly to minimize the uneven reflections off the sidewalls. Another suggestion is to add diffusion at the refl...
Previous ref 3 owners, what's in your system now
No_money, The Vandy 5A and all ARC combination has magic indeed. High definition tube amps mate very will with the glorious mid range of these speakers. I was very lucky to discover this in audio shows some years ago. As a result, I have not been ...
Acoustic treatment for corners.
Thanks, Vandermeulen. For me, everything starts with effective power conditioning and proper attention to the room and acoustics. Together, they set the foundation for evaluating, selecting and assembling a system to my taste.
Previous ref 3 owners, what's in your system now
I think you will find there are a great many Ref 3 owners out there that are delighted with their pre and have little or no interest in making a change. I, for one, am going to stick with mine despite the reports about the Ref 5 or other potential...
