No preamp in system
@OP. The best test is when you reinstall your preamp.  Perhaps your preamp has been limiting the sound of your system so the system actually does sound better without it. Or when you reinstall the preamp, maybe the sound will be better than with n...
Background vibration and your system.
A lot of people remark that their system sounds better at night and attribute this to less mains noise. But the complementary conjecture is that there is a lot less traffic activity at night - in urban environments anyway and so a lot less low fre...
Looking for a more solid-feeling turntable (and maybe a new preamp)
@OP The Luxman PD-151 is worthy of consideration as is a Technics 1200 or 1300. Both are solidly built and excellent sounding.
Gain level on a REL sub
@OP. I know you say the situation was different with a previous sub, but perhaps you are expecting too much of the Rel. There's only so much a sub can do when the main speakers are limited in frequency extension. But even given that, there is no ...
Source of Fremer's "1 arc second" claim?
@OP and Lewm - thanks for your responses. My point in relation to SEM's was a more general one in the sense that there is a tendency (not on your part, I hasten to add) that mass negates vibration. On the specifics, the average concrete floor is ...
Source of Fremer's "1 arc second" claim?
@lewm. A poured concrete floor isn't that inert at all - ask laboratories that use electron microscopes. In any event, isolation bases are there to isolate from airborne vibrations as well as those coming through the floor. And a pair of XVX's wil...
Vinyl playback - lack of bass?
@OP You need a better cartridge. Or at least a different cartridge. Ultimately a better turntable will help too.
Source of Fremer's "1 arc second" claim?
Mr Fremer in his recent review of the new Wilson Benesch turntable could not hear any difference when its vibration reduction base was or wasn't working. "Late breaking news: The day I completed the guts of this review, a leak developed in the Tho...
Standmount speaker suggestion
@OP. As others have said, the B&Ws are forward sounding. For Sonus Faber, you could start with the Minima Amator. The Franco Serblin Accordo Goldberg is in a similar vein - both lovely sounding speakers. ProAc tend to fly a bit under the radar...
Koetsu cartridges. They must be something special.
Re magnets, bizarrely, they do have a sound. If you listen to some Strat pickups with ceramic magnets vis a  vis those with alnicos, you'll hear it pretty quickly. And its not just down to field strength.
And the biggest influence on sound quality is...
1. The room. A modest system in a great room can sound great whereas a great system in a bad room will sound worse - the wider you open the window, the more much flies in, as the saying goes. 2. The system - at the risk of repeating myself across...

Magico A series vs YG Peaks series and Accuphase Integrated
@OP The Maxima Amators are never going to be "rock" speakers. But at the same time, you don't want to throw the baby out with the bathwater for the other genres you listen to. If you have a good SF dealer, try to get a listen to a pair of Amatis i...
F-XLR to M-RCA recommendations
@mulveling, fair point - I missed that. That being the case, I think tyray would be better looking at a different DAC. If not, I second your recommendation of using a transformer to convert balanced to single ended. Still, its an awful lot of faff...
F-XLR to M-RCA recommendations
@tyray, thanks. Just on your earlier post about galvanic isolation - that generally involves using a transformer in, generally, a DAC, to isolate the DAC from incoming noise on the USB input. However, transformers are often used in balanced circu...
