Basic question about sensitivity
@erik_squires - not disagreeing, but at least Stereophile and Hi Fi News are trying to be as informative as possible. But what the EPDR measurements of a range of speakers do tell us is that, in general, speakers are harder to drive than most manu...
Table,cartridge,phono...where to put most of my money?
@OP - what is the digital front end in the system that the analogue setup will be compared to?
Basic question about sensitivity
The EPDR measurement used by Hi Fi News and Stereophile gives a better indication of how difficult a load a speaker will present to the amplifiers. The B&W 800 series are a good example of speakers that are relatively efficient but difficult ...
Why isn't better quality used gear being made available?
@OP - A vast amount of high end gear gets traded in to dealers who frequently have a long term relationship with their high end customers. That may or may not end up on generalised sale sites like Audiogon or Hi Fi Shark. A lot of it gets trickled...
Fleetwood Deville vs Wilson Sound
What's a Wilson Sasha "tier"? There are large differences in SQ between the different models of Sasha.
Effects of concrete as base for subs, speakers and potentially equipment
@OP If you have wooden floorboards, one problem with putting concrete slabs under speakers is that it can be difficult to get the slab to be stable. Personally, I favour making platforms of thick ply and screwing those into the floor. That provide...
Aggrivated tinnitus from speakers?
@OP 85dB is quite loud so listening at a lower volume level will help. However, improvements to room acoustics and probably a more refined speaker will too. However, I would still be careful with the volume levels. You may be tempted to play loude...
Tung-Sol kt170 tube started glowing brighter
@OP The tube is starting to red plate. Don't try to rebias the tube as it will only hasten it's demise.
Martin Logan vs. Everything
In my experience, people who like electrostatics very rarely switch to cone based drivers. (I know most MLs are hybrid) but they are fundamentally electrostatics.
Do people tire of audio forums?
@Sns - I completely agree with your observations. One particular trait that gets my goat is posters with an absolutist view who really just post looking for affirmation that their view is correct and then entirely refuse to engage with any reasone...
What to expect if I import an amp and preamp from a Japan seller via US eBay
@OP. Differences in prices across territories are driven by: freight and insurance, duties - which apply to the ex-works price plus the freight and insurance, distributor margins plus distributor costs which include all the costs related to repres...
Help me spend $100,000 on a new system
@OP - Thats already a very good system. The weak points are the CD player and cables. If you can, try to audition the Esoteric K-01XD CD/SACD. Also, as already suggested, better AQ cables will deliver a significant improvement. After that, perhaps...
Anyone has a reference system where amplification is SS ?
@invalid - I haven't argued that SS devices are transparent. The point is that, assuming that the manufacturer is strict about tolerances, SS amplifiers will sound the way they were designed to sound. Tube equipment will sound different depending ...
ATC SCM150ASLT
@OP Regarding ATC updates, ATC have been using essentially the same driver technology for ages. ATC founder Billy Woodman died fairly recently so I wouldn't be expecting massive changes in their designs in the short term - though that's just specu...
Anyone has a reference system where amplification is SS ?
@OP If "reference sound" is sought then tube rolling is a disadvantage. How can you have a reference if the sound changes everytime the active devices are changed?
