Rega/Totem combo wow!
For a second system I had Totem Dreamcatchers on demo with my existing Rega Cursa/Maia combo which had been displaced from my main system by a Naim 282/250 and if I didn’t listen to a lot of solo piano music I’d have bought them. I was happy with ...
Speakers good for close to wall placement
Wilson Duette 2s were designed to go back against a wall, they were quite pricy though and seem to have been discontinued, maybe Tune Tots are their replacement. Crossing the Atlantic there are the Audionote UK speakers based on the old Peter Snel...
What's wrong with classical music on vinyl?
A quick look at the OP’s current profile shows no mention of a turntable.
Anyone experienced speed issues with Artemis Labs SA-1?
After getting a few microlitres of oil into the motor and letting it soak in the deck is running reliably again and sounding its old self. Also the motor noise, which was audible up close from the time I got the deck is now just about inaudible. W...
At wits' end with radio through the speakers!
I had radio pickup when I bought a Naim Superline phonostage, mostly in Russian. A 1nf loading plug (in parallel with the resistive load) reduced the level to where I could live with it but I could never eliminate it until I swapped out the steel ...
New AT cartridge thoughts/question
Some claim 50 hours, some say its a myth. I’ve certainly heard some fairly drastic changes in the first few hours with one cartridge I’ve owned with the bass filling out and the top end calming down, and hardly any from others. After 50 hours you ...
Warm up time for record playing
If it was just your hearing changing than digital sources would take just as long but they take 20 minutes compared to nearly an hour for the turntable.
TONEARM DAMPING : DAMPED OR NOT ? ? USELESS ? ? WELCOMED ? ?
I bought an Elite Rock in 89, I used it with a Rega 300 arm for 20 years and tried it with and without the trough and outrigger but never for very long. I then bought a lightly used Naim Aro, and initially used the damping arrangement but this tim...
The "other" singers you enjoy.........?
Peter Hammill, sometimes with the band Van der Graaf Generator. Not a conventional voice and avoid his live recordings as your first taste of him. Godbluff or Still Life might be the best place to start, both VDGG albums.
Odd problem with TT setup...
Does the damping trough help?
1st Album you Ever Owned?
Pink Floyd, Relics, second was ELP, Picture at an Exhibition. They were both cheaper, new, than the average for albums at the time. Third I think was Dark Side of the Moon, my first at full price.
Anyone experienced speed issues with Artemis Labs SA-1?
It seems the upper motor bush has run dry and worn, at least I can feel some play in it. I’ve been in the habit of leaving the deck running all day as the sound improves for the first hour after switch on, sometimes I forgot to turn it off before ...
Vinyl collection, now what?
What does your uncle suggest and will he guide you through setting up a deck?
Are my standards too high?
Go and find some MBL 101 X-tremes, when the shows start again. They’re mighty impressive with orchestral music. At Munich a couple of years ago that was all they were playing on them so I don’t know how they’d fare with a bit of motörhead or Tool,...
SPDIF cable same as coaxial cable?
I used a spare RCA interconnect (nominally 50Ω) for Spdif when I first got a DAC, it worked but a cable designed for the job but with RCAs on both ends was quite an improvement and a 75Ω cable with BNC connectors (Belden 4794R) better still even t...
