Miles Davis "Kind of Blue"
To me, this is one of those recordings that I never get tired of; I've owned several pressings and the Classic records pressing is the best. Every time I hear it it's still magical, romantic, involving, hypnotic and draws you into a mood world. I ...
Your ONE all time favorite love song?
Emerson Lake and Palmer.."Still.. You turn me on" Brain Salad Surgery 1973.
Spica TC-50's vs 60's. Differences + Maintanence.
I have owned two pairs of TC-50's, I slightly modded one pair with cardas wiring, Edison price jacks. Sound became a little smoother, but not by much. You can remove the felt from the front baffle which will dramatically alter the sound, you have ...
My Levinson doesn't like the juice
yeah I'm a dan fan..I wish someone would make a hi-fi half speed pressing of Pretzel Logic. Get rid of the Levinson and buy a used big Threshold.
Dirt on my stylus.....what to do?
Basement is right. Diskwasher is the best. I use the Stylast preservative and the Record Research, never had any problems with the liquid hurting the cartridge.
THE Eternal dissatisfied
might i suggest a passive preamp like the First Sound. Try different cables, try Cardas Golden Cross. Experimenting with cables may get the voicing you like without changing power amp. Personally I would stay away from Mark Levinson, sort of thin ...
What's the funniest or dumbest thing you did?
Speaking of Dads, when I was sixteen back in 1977 I bought my first integrated amp, a JVC 30 watter as I recall, and tried hooking it up to try it out after school on my dad's Pioneer Project 60's (anyone remember them?) Oh, er, I forgot to discon...
LP pressings..which country or label...
It depends on the particular recording and where the master tape was made.. for example, all the Brian Eno records from the 70's sound MUCH better on the Polydor Deluxe label from England as opposed to the EG US label.. Yes, King Crimson, Genesis,...
Time for a new turntable......
Any rega, esp. P9 with a cardas wired arm should be a good step up, in my opinion. I used to have a Denon table years (about 16 years) ago and thought it was great, until I heard a demo with a Rega. I then went to a Rega Planar 3 and it was much b...
My first Turntable... need some suggestions please
Rega Planar 2 or Planar 3, maybe used for $500. What gets pricy is a good moving coil pick up. After using moving coils I would never go back to moving magnet design, with the exception of the better grados. I like Benz Micro, but there are countl...
Ear Plug/Hearing Protection Poll
Best earplugs I've used are called 'Flents' and are a sort of moldable waxy-cotton plug. 'What do I think of the noisy world we live in?' I'd love to move further out into the country, as far away as possible from neighbors who crank their sterios...
Stax Lambda Pro Headphones--Can sound Hard??
I would agree with the last comment. I have had the same Pro Lambda's and the accompaning "box" for over a decade now. Whereas they are incredibly clean and revealing (at least with my passive pre and forte 1a power amp) they are a bit hard as you...
Replacing internal wiring.
I have done this on my Spica's and on my JBL L-166's, and yes, it does help a little bit.. a little smoother, a little less hash-y. I would NOT recommend replacing wire in an amp unless the amp's designer is consulted or it's a mod others have don...
Great sound at high volume
If I wanted rock n roll loud, I'd go with an old pair of JBL L-200's or L-300's, Altec 19's or VOT's and a big ol' Threshold power amp.
Caribbean Music
You've never heard of Dave Valentine? best jazz flute player I know..from Puerto Rico by way of the Bronx. There's a cd out with him and Dave Samuels (vibes) called Carribean Jazz, it's exceptional. Very Spanish Carribean. I listen to a lot of reg...
