Honest question about cartridge vs. turntable performance.
It isn't an either or situation.Mind exercise: A cartridge can put out X - X= 100%  That's if it were held perfectly in the air with no external vibrations affecting it.Attach it to an arm on a turntable with interconnects to a phono preamp etc. a...
Why are there so many wooden speakers?
Don't we have a few speaker manufacturers that hang out here? This is all at the theoretical level - it would be nice to take it to the experimental level. Get a manufacturer to make a pair of speakers (perhaps their mid  priced models) in two or t...
8 track tape vs 1st press vinyl
I had an older Lamborghini for several years on a limited license that mandated period accessories including radio. It was fitted with an 8 track player. Aside from the fact that every time I shifted into first, third or fifth gears I pushed the t...
Threshold, Levinson, Bryston, Krell, ?others? used amps
Agree with Bedini, older Adcom, and Classe (older true Class A versions) that will drive just about anything.  I also agree that getting servicing on such amps is getting harder and harder to find, and some of those true class A amps are really he...
What do you sit on?
The home theatre chairs available are worth looking into as they are built for long term use, support and adjustability - a bad back can be assuaged by a half hour spent in a reclined position. My speakers require rather anal set up using a laser s...
Putting weights on speakers?
Hmm...my speakers weight more than 400 lbs. each.  I think adding weight would just turn my spikes into nails that I'd never get out.....
What are the sexiest components ever made?
Quad ESL 57s - and they are theft proof as well unless you are unlucky enough to be burgled by the radiant heater thief.
Ever feel like a "low dollar" customer that your dealer doesn't think worth their time?
The ways in which dealers and salesmen turn people off aren’t limited to monetary issues.I’ve gone into serious stores and pretty much without me asking anything, a salesman has decided that I wanted to hear his theories of audio purity to the poi...
Cool it!
I have always preferred Class A amps with properly designed heat sinks that cool sufficiently without and added fans (which might fail, possibly cooking your amp).I have one system that runs two mono Class A amp, each of which puts out around 400 ...
Low volume listening dynamics
Relating speaker sensitivity to low volume detail seems incorrect to me.  One of my systems has really excellent low volume realism, and the speakers are the lowest efficiency of any I own - 86 dB.
Unbelievable
Yamaha really made this statement:Glossy black piano finish provides improved signal-to-noise performance Makes sense.  A grand piano sounds way better than an accordion - I'm sure it must be the paint.  Bet it would be even further ahead if yo...
How many NICE looking high end floor standing speaker are there at present
Once you decide on how much you can spend on speakers, the question becomes one of how you want to have that divided between aesthetics and performance.Vandersteen is probably the king of functionality - spend all the money on performance and when...
Are integrated amps technically better than separates?
Not a good thing to put your sensitive preamp circuitry in close proximity to the power supplies for both the preamp and power amp.One of my  preamps has a separate power supply that is connected to the rest of the circuitry by  special umbilical ...
Is room treatment a science?
You can probably get a reasonable result that you are happy about by simple self administered methods or you can spend money up front and get an audio guy (they are normally involved with setting up home theatres) to come in and analyze the room f...
Why do you guys pursue a flat frequency response when you buy a subwoofer?
A lot of people - just about all car audio guys, and a dismaying number of fairly serious audiophiles, are impressed with the slam of big bass and aren't really being honest if they say they want accuracy (although the ones on the audiophile end w...
