Class A amplifiers A well built Class A amp might need servicing every 30 years or so...but so will all the non Class A amps - they need the electrolytic capacitors renewed.
Single vs. Dual Subs I ran a single powered sub (15" driver) for awhile in my main listening room and then added a second. The second made a considerable difference to the sound.
Old Amps that can still Kick Butt I like Class A amps despite the heat they put out. Have several Classe DR3 VHC, and a Belles A - not many made of any of those but still excellent sounding assuming they are in good shape (which usually means some capacitor replacement at this ag...

Bin dug noisy records. Does it diminish your enjoyment? Need more discerning pre purchase examination. Gundge is OK as long as you own a cleaning machine. Scratches are not.
Watt Gives? An amp's ability to deliver current, especially into 4 ohms and lower, is a better indicator of its performance with different speakers than its voltage rating! Agree. I have always enjoyed using amps with big power supplies that can deal with...
At This Time Can We Recreate Full Range Live Music In The Home? Small jazz ensemble, sure. Baroque string group, easy.Full symphony orchestra - no. How do you know if you need to add a sub (without auditioning one, I mean)? You don't NEED a sub, but you may want one. Suggest that you buy a Hsu VTF 15H Mk 2 in plain black for under $1,000 (costs another $150 fro wood veneer finish) and see how you like it. Strongly advise that you add a second one when you can afford it.

Recommendations for a new Basement home theater. I'd go looking for a projection set up if you can afford it. That TV is decent, but a bit small for the theatre experience. I use a 110" screen which seems about right.I like (and use) a Marantz AV preamp in my theatre. I'd go for a separate power...
Hi end audio equip sounds better today than in decades past due to tech - T/F While the average quality MAY have improved, certain vintage gear still sounds as good, or in some cases better than current stuff. If you ever have a chance to sit in front of a pair (or even one) original Quad ESL57s driven by original Quad amp...
How many vinyl albums do you own you listen to? I have around 4,000 LPs - classical, jazz and pop. The movers messed up my filing when we moved a few years ago, and we have just finished resorting. I took the opportunity to sift for duplicates and albums I really didn't want to keep and am sen...
Do you care about car audio? Car audio is something that you improve only if it really bothers you - it is something that has to be just good enough that you can listen to it without wincing while driving to where you have your real system at home. There is a valid argument fo...
Holographic Soundstage ? Is your hearing holographic? When your sound system can reproduce a single unamplified instrument so that you can't tell without opening your eyes whether you are sitting in an audition space listening to the instrument or in your listening room ... |
