Short list of musical subwoofers Hsu subs are excellent and well priced. I prefer (and own) a pair of powered VTF-15H MK2
Line Stage Preamps that blew you away $2500 Edition The Conrad Johnson Premier 14 I use in my main system is the first tube preamp that really drew me in. All of the good things that tubes can offer without any of the things that often come with that which I don't like. Originally around $4K, ...
Not manufactured any more. Martin Logan Monoliths Apogee Scintillas (I own one of the few power amps capable of driving those 1 ohm amp killers, but have never been able to find a pair for sale) Vandersteen 4A (I also own a pair of those - only a few hundred made i...
Phono Preamp upgrade I was really impressed with Hagerman value after I bought a Piccolo head amp from them to replace a step-up transformer that was introducing some noise. Dead quiet and no change in sound (the phono stage I use was a $5000 unit when new).
Finally Learned: Subs serve much larger role than adding more low bass The PSRs have been solid as a rock. Richard gave me Hell when I sent him one of the mid-range drivers was toasted - he thought I had abused his speaker (it was really one of the mono Classe amps having a seizure and sending out a pulse that annih...
Finally Learned: Subs serve much larger role than adding more low bass I think Richard was on the right track - roll the bass off for the mids and highs, which won't be affected by frequencies they can't reproduce well anyway, and use the electronic unit simply to adjust gain on the bass frequencies to suit the outpu...
Finally Learned: Subs serve much larger role than adding more low bass @desktopguy I use Vandersteen 4As in my third system and the provision for low bass goes further with them than with most speakers - a separate crossover to control volume of low bass, a couple of high quality capacitors to roll the bass off from...
Tube Vs. SS Preamps I think that the classic era tube preamps definitely coloured the music albeit in a way many liked, but most modern tube preamps tend to be uncoloured in that way. In the CJ line up, the clouration was obvious in the old PV9 but is absent in the...
Finally Learned: Subs serve much larger role than adding more low bass My main speakers don't benefit as much from subs as they are good to 20 Hz on their own. Obviously the limitation there is that you are locked into the manufacturers set up as the low bass isn't independently adjustable as it is with separate subs...
Conrad Johnson PV12 vs. Audible Illusions Modulus 3a I like the Modulus 3 and would put it a bit ahead of the PV12 (an PV5). but it isn't up to my main system preamp, a CJ Premier 14.
Is advice from a constant upgrader to be avoided @surfcat "The search for betterment is the passion of the intelligent and curious mind. It is not a disease and not a symptom of a disease. The inability to understand that coupled with the need to ridicule it is, however, a symptom of retardatio...
Best Phono You've Heard Under $2200 If you shop for used gear in good condition you can do pretty well I paid around $2K Can for my Venfetta SCP-2D (but it took several years of hunting to find one) and similar prices for my CJ Premier 15.
Is advice from a constant upgrader to be avoided There is a subset of this hobby that suffers from auiophilia nervosa - never satisfied with a current component, always searching for the grail amplifier or speaker. Best not to embark on that journey with them.
Great song to test bass Stanley Clarke, East River Drive is a good bass test CD
If a " system " cannot do this, I move on........ With obvious bass issues, I have to say that many elctrostatic speakers rival or supass many horns systems in realistic sound reproduction. I acknowledge that mating a sufficiently good subwoofer with an eletrostat can be problematic. |
