MoFi So Long So Wrong Yeah, my copy of that Sinatra Mofi is a bit dead in the sonics, too. Not bad but not great, like you say. Milt Jackson's Invitation, on the other hand, is great sonically. My Michael Brecker's Pilgrimage is sonically so-so but my Little Feat's Sai...
Seeking floorstander for low watt SET As Darkmobius said, we really need to know your tube to make proper recommendations. A 10/10Y or 45 has very different needs than a 300B or 845, e.g., but all may be considered low-watt SETs.
DeVore Silverbacks I auditioned a Calypso Sig and VAC Phi Beta preamp at home using new model Bryston amps and PMC speakers. The Calypso was excellent but the VAC was a serious step up. Of course, the Calypso is around half the price; the Callisto would be the prope...
Amp suggestion for Merlins? One more vote for Manley. I bought a pair of TSM-Mmi last spring to mate with a Stingray II and I'm extremely happy with the sound. The Manley puts out around 20w in triode or 40w in ultraliner. In my very large room, ultralinear is the way to go,...
Tube Life VAC recommends leaving their Signature-type preamps on 24/7 unless you're going to be away from the system for an extended period. That's what they do. I was told to expect to change tubes every 5 years using this regimen. Clearly, they expect a l...
Bryston sound 'neutral' ???? I fail to see the point of this thread.
My first tube preamp Manley jumbo shrimp The current Bryston SST2 lineup has excellent bass--and everything else, too. FWIW, I drove my 28Bs with a Manley Steelhead as a linestage for a while until my VAC preamp arrived and thought they went really well together.
Clearaudio " Innovation" - What? Yes, why pick on Clearaudio about the literality of a product name? I owned a Michell Orbe for years and thought it a fine turntable; but you know, it isn't actually spherical! I've known a few overweight guys named Robert; the Transrotor Fat Bob ...
Clearaudio " Innovation" - What? I think the "innovations" are the magnetic ceramic bearing and optical speed control. Google "Clearaudio Innovation Wood" and you'll find a review or two that discuss these things. Whether they're true innovations I couldn't tell you but they make...
Ortofon Silver Meister SPU Oops, the link above is wrong. Here's the right one:Meister Silver GMIIApologies for the round trip.
Ortofon Silver Meister SPU Hi Fromunda,I don't want to contradict Louis but if you're asking about the current Meister Silver GM MkII, it's listed on Ortofon's website as outputting .3mV with a DCR of 1.5 ohms and recommended loading of >10 ohms. If that's the case, you ...
Replaced stock McIntosh 12ax7a with gold lion ecc8 Don't worry about the glow--it's pretty much irrelevant. What you're hearing is the difference in sound character from stock Mac tubes, which tend to be bright and edgy, IME. The Golden Lions are richer in the mids and bass. They'll open up more i...
Lenco and Garrard external ac power supply Jeremey72, since you seem to value "humble knowledge," would that not preclude prejudice, which is presumed and prejudged knowledge, and not at all humble? Lots of people have agendas and opinions. Certainly Jean has his, and he's a character. But...
Lenco and Garrard external ac power supply I found him great to work with, very cooperative and service-minded. Did gorgeous woodwork on my turntable, too.
Lenco and Garrard external ac power supply I'll add that I owned a PurePower 2000 re-generator for a year or so. It's supposed to put out a constant 120v at 60 hz. It made no difference to my Reference Lenco motor at all. |
