Jazz for aficionados At home for the quarantine. I have 20 boxes of 100 LPs that are still sealed. They’ve been boxed since 1967. That’s when my family moved from California to Philadelphia. My mother worked for Columbia Records in California.i just came across 34 sea...
10 Audio Cable Myths and Facts I noticed that braided-wire speaker cables weren’t mentioned. Great!! That means they are truly the world’s best!! There is a real sonic difference then!! Whew!!! I’m validated!! The best $2300 I’ve spent on my system!
3D Printed records??? Apparently it's happening... Check dis out, vinyl fans...! erik_squires said:“I am not trying to be a troll here, but rather a forensic scientist. These albums are cut from digital files. If vinyl lovers prefer them over the digital files I am very very interested in why that is. :) “LPs have been made fro...
Does this happen often? Nope. If you get a kick from your laptop, that’s just your ears/brain adapting. THAT is what “break in” really is from speakers, electronics, cartridges.
Are big subwoofers viable for 2 channel music? Big subs are viable for 2 channel systems.i keep my subs below 24” drivers. That’s the ideal size for most rooms. Perfect, in fact. 24s put the right amount of movement where it needs to be. I angle mine up at 45 degrees. It’s wave simulated bass ...
Is it all worth it? Better than 80% of my music on LPs is not available digitally. And, unless you’ve heard it, how would you even know to search for it?i enjoy the great discoveries in lesser known music only available by picking up an obscure LP and playing it.Cabl...
These seem a bit pricey $$$ I enjoy listening to Steve’s reviews. I think he’s pretty down to earth, really. And you know what else? Never, not even once, did he EVER FORCE me to buy anything he has reviewed.
What would you say is THE MOST important factor to good imaging? Program material/mastering. If it’s not there, no speaker placement, no cables, no room treatments, no electronics will create it or correct it or enhance it.
Do any still use an older high end tuner from the past?.... I still use my 1981 Sherwood S9600 CP receiver. It has always had a first rate FM receiver. Even used it in Europe. I use it now. It has the best FM section I’ve ever had, out of 11 receivers. It’s an analog tuner with digital display, PLL phase l...
How old to qualify for vintage? I know I’ll get a lot of grief over this. But vintage audio really does have a cutoff year.in the US, there is a specific term for “Muscle Car” as well. It is a car from 1955-1971. The Arab oil embargo killed the American Muscle Car in 1973. Fuel e...
Charity store bin diving? Am I the only one that suffers this addiction? I have 7 thrift stores within easy reach. My favorite sells vinyl LPs 10/$1. So it’s not uncommon for me to lug home 40 or 50 LPs at a time. Fortunately, I have wide-ranging tastes! My last trip I snagged 4 pristine RCA Red Seal Stereo LPs from 19...
Cassettes still rock! I still have my cassette tape deck from 1981, Technics RSM 240X, and the Maxell UDXL II tapes that I recorded from 1981-1984. I upgraded that deck to the AIWA AD-F780 in 1988, but kept the Technics dbx deck also. That AIWA 3 head/dual capstan driv...
Dried up Ferrofluid? Guess I’m officially a cheapskate. I made my own ferrofluid. I have a bag of ferrite cores I bought for making coils. I used a smooth knife sharpening stone and ground the ferrite core into a fine powder. I used 30 wt Mobile 1 synthetic oil. I mix...
Bose 901 I’ve listened to 901s, Series IV, properly set up. They are just flat fun to listen to! Very fast, dynamic, detailed, with nice imaging and room fill. Visceral and not fatiguing at all. Enjoyable speakers, with a small footprint. I thoroughly enjo...
Power Amplifiers I’m using 2 mono-block tube amps I built from schematics published in 1958, from books my father had and was going to throw away. Switch Mode Power Supplies. Modern passive components. All RCA tubes. The finest amps I’ve heard. Class A 45 Watts/ch... |
