Bose 901
Back in 1982 I listened to 901 Series IV, I believe. Fun speakers! College dorm rooms. Mine were Boston Acoustics A70s. The 901s took up very little space, played to loud volumes, and did a nice job rendering detail without fatigue. Bass was tight...
Stereo Receivers from the past...
I love the Sherwood’s, 60s-1981. I still have my 1981 S9600 CP.  it’s my daily driver. Superb analog tuner, great phono preamp, all discrete components. 95 Watts/ch. They fly under the radar, so prices are excellent.
LP made from a digital master recording...
1979. Rise. Herb Alpert. The first track is analog mastered. All the remaining tracks were digitally recorded on 3M’s new 32 bit mastering system. I have the original vinyl pressing. 10 years later, in 1989, I bought the CD.The LP is far superior ...
Amplifiers weight
I have 2” granite sides and bass plate on my amp. My amp weighs 245 lbs. It’s the best amp ever made, bar NONE! The weight of an amp determines its quality. One of the major criteria all should use!
Speakers Don’t Matter As Much As We Think They Do?
Really good speakers dont cost as much as they used to. Many very good used speakers available for less money too.
How to guarantee to lower noise- ground loops in your system
If all circuits are to Code, AND there is a proper low resistance earth ground, you won’t have any mains circuit ground loops. This is all an absolute waste of time and money.
Your first system and your journey...
First car stereo in a 1975 Chevy Monza: Kraco am/fm 8-track with matching Kraco 6” speakers with the all-important “whizzer cones” for treble response.1981: College, Sherwood S9600 CP receiver (still have it, works great!) Boston Acoustics A70 Spe...

Chemically Altered Audio
Isn’t graphene only 1 molecule thick? How would anyone REALLY know graphene is in the mix? You can’t see it. Can’t weigh it. Can’t smell it. I might be holding a piece of it in my hand right now, and not know it! 38 years ago I treated my Records ...
best phono stage under 10k
In the last 50 years I’ve owned no fewer than 22 phono pre’s. Some have been very nice units, others pretty much run of the mill.A month ago I bought a phono pre that was the only 1 to literally make my jaw drop! Finally! The mysterious veil was r...
Who else here is frugal?
I’m about as frugal as one can get. I still have my first receiver, and use it daily, from 1981. I still use both pairs of speakers, the only ones I’ve ever purchased, from 1985 and 1989. I have 10 turntables, each one was purchased non-working an...
What is the most FUN pair of speakers you've ever had and why?
A pair of the original Carver Amazing loudspeakers. These were FUN speakers!! They sound incredibly good, AND so many high end audio companies said Bob Carver could never pull it off!
INNER GROOVE DISTORTION
I’ve never experienced IGD in any of my tables, with any of my cartridges. Not ever. Not in 50 years.  Whether conical, elliptical, hyper elliptical, LC, or Ridge Contact styli, I’ve never had it. Yes, other kinds of distortion from various proble...
Playing mono records properly without breaking the bank - a phono pre-amp question.
Just use a good stereo cartridge with good channel separation. Lots of garbage being spewed out trying to sound knowledgeable or scientific. You dont need to disable the stereo cart. The ever-so-slight differences in channels will be cancelled or ...
Eh hem!...Subwoofers... What do ya know?
I only have 1 powered sub. No DBA. I found that modeling my room, which is an “L” shape, and using it to model a horn, resulted in incredible bass, fast and tight. Pouring money into the problem is back-asswards.
