Primaluna Prologue 2 Upgrades
I recently put a pair of Psvane 12AX7 T IIs in a Jolida and they sound great...clear highs and tight bass, with an overall clean presentation without tubey artifice. There was nothing wrong with the Tubestore "Preferred" 7025s I had been using but...
Soundstage vs background noise?
Well designed tube amps with tubes running as they should have a very low noise floor, and spatial queues galore...also this post has one of my extremely rare uses of the word "galore."
Please alleviate my fears
There seems to be something wrong with the volume pot and/or whatever it's driving. You should have linear volume control or life simply is not worth living.

I do blast my hifi sometimes...and the entire house resonates...I like that.

Schubert...it was a weird score as I'd just heard a set of Preludes at a friend's house, and my then current speakers had a midrange mush issue (Vienna Bachs bad crossover component maybe)...a wonderful accident that happened to me because I'm suc...
Speakers that do pianos really well
One of the concert series I often work as a soundman has a gigantic Steinway that is tuned for every show...it's an amazing piano, but remember...microphones all sound different, and the recorded (or live miked) sound has a LOT to do with the mic ...

Ditto Silverline Preludes, but with the addition of a sub. I scored my Preludes for 400 bucks used...current version...Ebay or something, and they simply needed a speaker to be wired to the xover (seller paid for that)...maybe that's why they were...

Interesting point Martykl makes...all piano recordings sound a little different (some a LOT different) and that is where the mojo lives...i.e. being able to clearly and instantly hear those differences. I think a good sub really makes pianos come ...
Do Active Speakers Belong In A High End System?
My only beef with active speakers is the fact that if something goes down, it's dead until fixed...as opposed to swapping in another speaker or amp. Otherwise it makes a LOT of sense in design opportunities, etc. If you want to see actives in a "b...

I listen to a lot of piano (jazz trios, classical, etc.)and I have a pair of Silverline Preludes (current version) that do piano amazingly well...with an older REL sub.
Putting together first system... clueless.
I don't think too much headroom is an issue with moderately powered tube amps. Also, I rarely pass up an opportunity to question the picking of a "type of music" for hifi components...get the widest frequency range stuff you can afford as all musi...
Putting together first system... clueless.
A Jolida integrated would cost about half of what a Primaluna costs, likely have more power, and they sound fabulous. (note...Jolida plug # 784)
Entire system cable recommendation
I strongly suggest used cables...of any kind, although my personal preference is for solid core AQ stuff. I have a pile of clean AQ cables bought here and there for a fraction of their original cost, and the system synergy sounds stunningly sounds...
Linn Axis, Akito
I use a vintage but mint Basik/Akito/Sumiko Pearl rig with a Jelco/Mogami DIN cable...this setup sounds so damn good I have no current desire to upgrade, although the Rega RP6 might sneak in there someday if I can get over the lack of VTA adjustme...
Signal Cable REL cable vs Speakon Custom REL cable
My new-ish REL cable lowers the dust content of my listening room, and has made me a much better person.
