Dan D 'Agostino, Mark Levinson, Jim Thiel,
Surprised that I think Carver is an annoying freak? I might be the only one who feels this way, but he seems insane.
Dan D 'Agostino, Mark Levinson, Jim Thiel,
Audiolabyrinth...unless you're joking or working for Carver...that add has run before and I think it's ridiculous, and although those with 5,000 sq ft listening rooms might like the speakers, that add does little to dispel Carver's reputation as s...
"Holographic" presentation
I owned an amp years ago that featured pornographic imaging. It was creepy so I sold it.

This is what recording engineers do: Record things to their or the producer's or the artist's taste (mic selection, eq, possible compression, ambient information either natural or from devices), and pan each instrument to wherever they think it ne...
BAT Service
My all time fave repair story: I had a ProCo RAT guitar gizmo serviced by ProCo 3 times over 30 plus years...all completely free of charge (except for the minor fees I incurred shipping it to them), returned to me in a box of candy twice, and cand...

As with most hifi subjectivity, the proof is in the listener's pudding so to speak. Also, many (many) other factors not including the use of mono amps (dual mono? most well made stereo anything?) can have a profound effect on what basically is gre...
Silverline Prelude Plus floorstanders
I have the last gen Preludes also and can say (and will say) they are capable of sounding amazingly good if well set up with good things driving them (I put mine on wood blocks to raise the tweeter to my ears with Vibrapods under them)...very accu...
How loud is loud?
My preamp has zero adjustments for anything although I turn my sub up and down in a small range from time to time and that's all it needs. I assume people listen to different levels depending on how they feel (late at night I can easily enjoy list...
Dan D 'Agostino, Mark Levinson, Jim Thiel,
Levinson (the person) has designed some new-ish stuff from Daniel Hertz and lives in Venice (on a boat maybe?). He seems to come up with interesting things from time to time, as does his old company owned by Harmon (I think). Same with Krell in th...
Tubes at idle
I'm no expert but I bet they do since the glowing electrodes are still glowing and that doesn't change much when music is playing...isn't idle current still current? I'm amazed at how long the damn things last , and turn mine off when not around i...
Psvane KT88 tubes in VAC amps
Another vote for Psvane 12AX7 T-IIs...a design unique to them seemingly (extra spacer?) and a sweet, stable, full range sound. Been burning a pair for a while and love 'em.
Anyone attach an REL sub to Cary amp?
I use spades from my REL cable on the same 5 way posts that carry the banana plugs for the main speaker cables so they stay out of each other's way. The REL puts a very high impedance load (100,000 ohms?) on the amp output so it shouldn't burdon i...
Your most disappointing purchase or audition?
A 1 meter Mogami XLR cable I bought from Guitar Center...I've used Mogami instrument and mic cables for years with success, and have a Neglex from my Akito tonearm that sounds great, but this run from my preamp to amp (XLR input on the amp but not...
Where for a tube-newb to start?
Read the descriptions of stuff that "thetubestore.com" sells. It's laid out reasonably (unlike a lot of other dealers) and clearly. Good stuff, and a nice company to buy from.
Cleaning lady and vacuum
I have a thing about tweeters being covered with mesh...my current main speakers have aluminum/mangesium tweets with strong metal screens that no cleaning lady, child, or errant thrown object can bother...when I look at many expensive Majicos or w...
