Where do you look for rare records and pressings ?
There are some trusted dealers out there, but no assurance that they have what I am chasing at the moment and prices tend to be higher than what I can find on the usual sources like E-Bay (country of origin in some cases) or Discogs. Every once in...
Best reissue or older version of Led Zeppelin 4 in vinyl.
You might want to search out the George Piros and George Peckham ("Porky") mastered reissue from the mid-’70s. The Monarch pressings (a plant that is now regarded in hindsight as having pressed a lot of good sounding records) tend to be bombastic,...
Marvin Gaye "What's Goin' On" MFSL UDOS 45rpm
@slaw - I didn't meant to condemn the title and apologize if that's how my post read. I intended to convey that generally, I have not found most of the Motown/Tamla vinyl to sound very good, and the copy of this I do have- which was given to me as...
Marvin Gaye "What's Goin' On" MFSL UDOS 45rpm
The proof will be in the listening. I’ve never had great experience with the sonics of the Motown/Tamla releases- the best sounding ones were cut by Kent Duncan in my experience. Many sounded wooly and muffled. One of the best of the Stevie Wonder...
Golden age of vinyl recordings?
@inna- Chris Blackwell’s Island Records, an independent label at that time, was eating every other label’s lunch- he had signed Stevie Winwood and Traffic, went on with Jethro Tull, Fairport Convention, the band Free, King Crimson, Nick Drake, Joh...
Golden age of vinyl recordings?
For me, the golden age has a lot to do with the music as well as the technology and is in the post-psych era in the UK, say ’68-71 or a little later. Studios were still somewhat primitive, bands had to be capable of playing the songs ’live in the ...
The current best band in the world?
Eric- dunno, it wasn't even on my radar until you mentioned the band and I looked up their tour schedule. I'd probably have to call in a favor to get a seat, but I can see. It is a good venue-- clean, modern, spare, sound is good, at least on the ...
The current best band in the world?
Look like they are playing here in November with Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman- mostly sold out already. http://acl-live.com/calendar/sweetheart-of-the-rodeo
Which band IS really America's Greatest (rock & roll band)?
@n80- one thing with genres is that anybody who is innovating is gonna break the boundaries. The genre labels are like the Hollywood pitch summaries- 'it's like Die Hard Meets the Terminator on the Titanic"-- sort of sums it up, but puts it in a b...
Which band IS really America's Greatest (rock & roll band)?
@n80- not to be picayune, but I generally don’t refer to Canada as America, even though we are on the same continent. The Band were great, love ’em. To me, rock and roll is the stuff that came out of the ’50s as a mix of boogie, country, blues and...
Which band IS really America's Greatest (rock & roll band)?
Based on the above, I’d probably say NRBQ as well. I don’t think of bands like Grand Funk or The Eagles as ’rock and roll’ in the narrow sense of it-and much as I enjoyed The Band, Traffic and some of the others mentioned, I don’t think they are A...
Cleanest CD recording to test with
Check out the Wolfert Brederode Trio on ECM, recent recording entitled "Black Ice." Available on CD for reasonable cost. Stunning sound, and great, spare music, well-produced and played.
Horns: Why don't they image well?
@erik_squires -There was a litigant who wrote something really nasty- a paragraph's worth- about the judge and when he got hauled in front of the court on a contempt motion, his defense was;"Oh, sorry, your Honor, that was a typo." :)
Horns: Why don't they image well?
It presents a different perspective than dynamic speakers. I was a very long time electrostat listener (started with old Quads in 1973). I switched to horns (Avantgarde Duo) and SET (Lamm ML2) in around 2006-7. A much more 'in the room' presentati...
What is the fascination?
I think @albertporter could tell you his story better than me-- he had a Walker- a fancy, no holds barred modern (at the time) table and was experimenting with the Lenco (if memory serves). He liked the propulsive aspect of the idler but wanted to...
