Vinyl Accessories - Skip It or Buy It!

In praise of the ESL-57
I would not under-estimate how good the Quad II amps are with the 57, though they are very underpowered for most applications, my Quads sing with them. When I originally had the 57s set up in the '70s, I used an ARC Dual 75a (which was new at the ...
In praise of the ESL-57
Biggest issue as far as I know is arcing- when I had mine refurbished, a protection circuit was installed. There are people who DIY repair these things but that's way beyond my competence. Lot's to read about them if you dig, though.
In praise of the ESL-57
I bought my pair in 1973-4 (the receipt is still around somewhere) and ran them until around 1990 when I switched to the 63, which had been modified by Crosby Audio Works. That speaker played louder, but lacked the coherence of the 57 in my estima...
Amp repair cost — is this right?
I used Bill Thalmann to restore a whole bunch of old components I owned for use in a second, vintage system. I dropped off all the equipment at his shop- got a tour-quite a place, packed to the gills with hi-fi, musical instruments, vintage electr...
Just spoke to an old client of mine..........Avantgarde owner
I found it very tricky to get the Duo, the smaller horn/hybrid, to cohere- crank the woofers to get impactful bass and they sound discontinuous with the midrange horn; back off the woofers and you improve coherence but the speaker is bass shy. I s...
Second hand vinyl surface damage.
Impossible to tell without play checking the record, ideally after a good cleaning. There are tell-tales that can indicate a record is trashed, but even a pristine looking record can suffer from groove chew by old kludgey tone arms. I tend to look...
All posts are listed in reverse chronology
If you are saying that there are threads with posts that are completely out of sequence, that's one thing, but the sort button at the top of each thread, including this one, lets you put earliest or latest first as an ordering sequence. Perhaps wh...
How do you know when an LP is a first or early pressing?
There are two distinct inquiries here- one is how to determine if a record is truly a first pressing, which not only involves an examination of deadwax nomenclature, but label, including logo, sometimes the packaging, and what country of issue as ...
Jazz is not Blues and Blues is not Jazz.......
According to David Lindley, every song can be made into a reggae song. I largely disregard genre, other than the short pitch- most music (unless you dig deeply into early ethnic stuff that pre-dates recording technology) has a variety of influence...
How do you know when an LP is a first or early pressing?
ELP’s first album is one of the last pink labels before Island started using the pink rim in the UK. By the time of the pink rim, Island was pressing and distributing through EMI and the deadwax reflects EMI nomenclature. Previously, Island worked...
Am I asking too much?
@mdalton- ultimately, you’re the one paying and have to be happy with the service you are getting. I know some buyers are price sensitive and will do set ups themselves. Finding a dealer that does it all, and discounts, isn’t so easy. I had severa...
Am I asking too much?
I'm not sure all dealers are capable of doing a top notch set up. There's a big difference in performance between it works and sounds ok and really dialed in. When I lived in NY, I used Mike Trei as a set up guy- he's done countless turntable set ...
Update on Audiogon Member Almarg
Al epitomizes all that is right with people-- knowledgeable, generous with that knowledge while never condescending-- and all I know about Al is through his posts here. In real life, he must be quite a person. To Al, I wish to say that I think the...
Are there any audiophile heavy metal reissues on 45 rpm vinyl?
Hi, Mike. Dunno about 45 rpm but if that isn't essential and you are talking about early "proto" rather than more modern shredding, I can offer the following:the old Dutch pressing of Sabbath's Heaven and Hell (Vertigo);the first four Sabbath albu...
