Why do I keep torturing myself with remasters?
Norman- have you heard the old Horzu Die Beatles -2? It is a hoot, very spare, hard panned left and right, no additional effects. I don't have original Parlophones to compare, but I thought the mono box on vinyl was good.

I think Ralph is being modest - he IS atmasphere.

Ole- it is this one: https://www.discogs.com/David-Bowie-The-Man-Who-Sold-The-World/release/5806133I have not compared all the notable pressings, but this one punches, is not murky or strident. It is crank-able. I don’t think the one listed for $6...

oleschool- i found an early japanese pressing that sounds good. The early UK one is big money, and the US one - my understanding is, it's more about the cover. I can check my deadwax on the pressing I like if you want. It wasn't that costly compar...

Allman Brothers at Fillmore East, which one?
astro- not to belabor this, because i think at this point you are trying to take me to task for something, but the issues you present are:1. What does the Classic remaster of this record sound like, compared to an earlier pressing, in particular a...
Allman Brothers at Fillmore East, which one?
Astro- Happy to go back and make the comparison anew. It’s just not something I can do instantly.PS: my system hasn’t changed that much since I made that comparison, same amps, speakers, table, cables, same brand/model of phono cartridge- just the ...
Allman Brothers at Fillmore East, which one?
Astro - no disrespect intended to you by my use of the word "hi-fi" to describe the Classic. Yes, I am basing what I said on memory, but heard over my own system at the time with the copies to hand. I did, in fairness, acknowledge that some of thi...
Allman Brothers at Fillmore East, which one?
Astro- I have the Classic remaster as well as an early pink label Capricorn that I compared quite a while ago. My recollection is that the Classic has more "hi-fi" attributes- detail and more open in the midrange, as you mentioned, but that the ea...
What in the world is going on.....
fjn- if it is the MoFi re-do of Big Pink, try turning up the volume. That record was cut with really low gain. There are a few threads on this on the Hoffman board. I have a copy, but haven't played it in some time.
What in the world is going on.....
His early solo albums--standard issue-- sound pretty great as I remember. Don’t know if they were all Phil Ramone, but that would explain a lot. I have more respect for him now than I did back in the day--it was too "pop" oriented for me at the ti...

The first sign that the recording was at least mastered, if not recorded digitally is the download card that accompanies the record. Not that all digital is bad- I have some wonderful sounding records on vinyl that were natively recorded in digita...
Allman Brothers at Fillmore East, which one?
I have an early pink label Capricorn, I would have to check who mastered. It is a good sounding record, despite the challenges of the recording. Just checked a piece I wrote, Dennis King and George Piros both mastered these, I have one which is a ...
What piece(s) of equipment would you most like to try?
A full set up of period WE horns and amp stack, probably with the EMT 927 turntable and that EMT phono stage that is in current production.
