Loudspeakers have we really made that much progress since the 1930s?
I don't think we have lost the ability to innovate- the goals and priorities are different. When those magnificent early theatre sound systems were designed, they were addressing the needs of an entire industry transitioning to the "talkies" and t...
Who is you go to for top quality vinyl
Ole- for some prog reissues, reach out to Ken Golden who has a company called Laser's Edge (LP and CD). He has vast knowledge of older prog, especially the obscure Italian and German stuff, and can help you source reasonably priced reissues as an ...

Ole-Are you asking only about Japanese pressings or pressings made in various parts of the world? And I’m assuming you are talking about older pressings, right? Or new releases as well?I buy records from all over the world, I’ve gotten UK pressing...
remove tubes before moving cross town?
Inadvertently banging a tube and torquing the receptacles/pin clips in the socket will give you added work- more than simply pulling and replacing the tubes, you may have to tighten or repair the tube socket. In addition, even a relatively "smooth...

The Acapella line includes a plasma tweeter, not sure what relation it bears to the Plasmatronic. (<What a great name).
Loudspeakers have we really made that much progress since the 1930s?
There's no doubt that large theatre horn systems from the '30s are impractical for most homes. And many of the improvements cited have to do with smaller size to accommodate a home environment. (I remember early implementations of Villichur's acou...

Fabulous. Unfortunately, many of the vintage horn systems are expensive, but compared to the cost of some uber gear today, may not be so crazy. I went to a modern horn/SET implementation a decade ago. I'm intrigued by the vintage stuff.
Review: Acoustic Revive RR-77 Tweak
I was pretty skeptical of this, and don’t usually do fringe stuff, but was intrigued enough to get an RR-888. I experimented with positioning it in several  different places in the room, just using the wall wart that came with it. My best compromi...
Best current footers for preamps?
Most of these are going to change the sound in some way- sometimes for the better, sometimes, not so good, but all in the context of your system and your preferences. I tried a variety of different "footers" under the tube power supply chassis to ...
NYC Stereo Consultant ?
I like Mike Trei for table set up work- he is based in NY and a known quantity. As to consultant on system, the issue to my mind is whether you are relying on advice from someone who sells gear- if so, there is always the potential that the advice...
JBL Everest DD67000 vs. Avantgarde Duo Mezzo
Why don't you start an new thread, since you won't capture Shindo folks under this one? Just a suggestion to improve response rate, not an etiquette thing. I can also intro you to a guy I know in San Fran area who has Shindo and is in the process ...
JBL Everest DD67000 vs. Avantgarde Duo Mezzo
You guys interested in talking to Jim may have better luck emailing him through his Better Sound email address. His business, as far as I know, is to consult and provide on site set up advice for systems. There is a fair amount of info on him and ...
JBL Everest DD67000 vs. Avantgarde Duo Mezzo
2ndliner- I'd defer to Hornguys on your question. Jim was the original importer of Avantgarde in the States and a renowned set-up guy.
ISO advice on record cleaning fluids
AIVS No 15, followed by some kind of "pure water" rinse. You should buy two vacuum arm mounts and wands- one for the fluid and one for the rinse. The Disc Doctor or MoFi type pads work well on the VPI- though they absorb more liquid initially than...
JBL Everest DD67000 vs. Avantgarde Duo Mezzo
I would think that Shindo amp would be great with the Avantgardes assuming you already own it. Room size- you don't need a huge room for horns, mine's larger than yours but you could get it to work- you'll probably be a little more "near field" th...
