Recommend your best sounding LP's @bdp24 very kind of you--I'm a piker compared to some collectors or musicologists, but retiring has given me the time to really dig down. You're no slouch either.@goldeneraguy So nice to see you post. Always enjoy seeing you here- bringing a litt...
Recommend your best sounding LP's Steve Wilson = genius. Multi-instrumental, mixes, produces, remixes famous classic prog, cool sounds, constantly cranking out stuff, different collaborations, including that Israeli rock musician, his stuff with Mikael Akerfeldt of Opeth. Guy can ...
Recommend your best sounding LP's Cz- not sure how you play grade a sealed record, but I usually don’t buy old sealed records b/c there is often no recourse, and it is truly an unknown. PS: if you mean that a sealed record can have problems, I agree. Perhaps I misunderstood your p...
Recommend your best sounding LP's mm- no one source. Discogs is a decent starting place, but grading and pricing is all over the lot. For stuff like Warner green labels, many can be found in bins in used record stores all over the U.S. The Steve Hoffman forum is a good place to ge...
Recommend your best sounding LP's mmporsche- congrats on your new table. (I had responded to your earlier thread about the point of diminishing returns by suggesting that it varies, depending on a lot of factors). So, too, with record recommendations: are you after "sonic porn" ju...
What drugs do you use to enhance your listening experience? So, hi-fi is a sort of gateway drug. You buy a turntable, and the next thing you know, you are shooting junk. :)I dunno. I've been sober for going on 30 years, but back in the day, everybody got stoned to listen to music.Whatever floats your boat....
Do you clean your records before play, after play, or once (and then never again)? Map- check out Rushton's thread on DIY US if you haven't-the price of entry isn't crazy, and you can arguably get better results, but it isn't about convenience. And in my estimation, you still need some sort of vacuum machine, to take advantage o...
Do you clean your records before play, after play, or once (and then never again)? I don't like using the stylus as a dredge, but even after cleaning, some old records will still sound distorted or churn up stuff or foul the stylus- I will do an intensive re-clean, but at a certain point, if the record isn't playing cleanly, I'l...
Ry Cooder recommendation... and the great Harry Dean Stanton. String- see the first response to this thread.
Ry Cooder recommendation... +! Chazro. Other than 'Bop,' what other albums do both Cooder and Lindley play on together? (Love Lindley).
May I Please Hear Your Quad 57s or Open Baffles? Terry, no I haven't. I heard a few interations of the post-63 models--not even sure I could tell you the model numbers--but that was some years ago. My other pair is a vintage pair of Crosby modded '63s, which I haven't fired up in years. I always...
Ry Cooder recommendation... I'm no Ry Cooder expert, but the soundtrack to Paris Texas ain't bad. Cheap, standard issue old pressing should do it.
May I Please Hear Your Quad 57s or Open Baffles? Robin Wyatt is somewhere in the NY metro area- Jersey I thought. He was often demoing with restored Quad 57s. To me, there is no other speaker like it. If all else fails, reach out to Robin- he has a website and is an active, but small, importer/d...
Why pay so much for super high end? If people had the skill, time and willingness to experiment, modify and test, a lot of money could be saved, no doubt. And there is a robust DIY community- I give huge props to those folks that are skilled and can produce good sounding gear, some ...
Where is the significant point of diminishing returns on hi-end turntable? If you go that route, you might have AF make a couple extra arm mounting boards, finished as you want, so you don’t have to try to match finishes at some future time. |
