Best DAC?
There is a huge tradeoff between DACs in this price class in terms of soundstage vs. detail.  It really depends on what you want and what you prioritize.  I have been doing a boatload of DAC testing recently and I would put the Rockna Wavelight an...
LSA Voyager GAN 350 versus Merrill Audio Element Amps or AGD Grand Vivace and Vivace Amps
I have not done a compare but I do know one thing, AGD is the only company using GAN Modules that are specifically designed for audio.  Even Merrill's are repurposed. It may not make a difference ultimately (as I said, I have not done a direct com...
DAC Shootout Starts This Weekend
I had an interesting conversation last night on the topic of "accuracy" with a gentleman who is both and audiophile and a professional musician. When discussing the concept of "accuracy" his concern is tonal exclusively.  Does the instrument sound ...
DAC Shootout Starts This Weekend
@david_ten This is tough in that I don't have a Holo May and will not comment on that exact product.  But I do understand your point.  There are a few other brands I can think of (that will remain unnamed) that deliver experience over accuracy. ...
DAC Shootout Starts This Weekend
@in_shore Thank you for that compare.  That is super helpful!I just finished testing the Rockna Wavedream Edition.  This happened to be the SE but the only difference between the SE and the XLR is a fully balanced (and therefore double) circuit.  ...
DAC Shootout Starts This Weekend
So I have the Questyle and Khadas here and they are getting burnt in.  I did a little testing with them and am going to add in the need to evaluate the headphone amp. Specifically I will test the Khadas, Questyle, iPhone 6 since it has a headphone...
DAC Shootout Starts This Weekend
I would love to test the Holo May.  I have not had one traded in and I am not going to buy a unit of this sort as it is going to cost me a lot of money because I am obviously not going to keep it.  If someone wants to lend me one, I would be happy...
Diminishing returns?
i have recently done some testing on this with DACs rather than full CD players but when you upgrade, a big part of the upgrade should be a better DA Converter and analog output stage. My experience is there is way more difference between a $2K DA...
Alternatives to B&W 805 D4
B&W are lovely and highly resolving speakers.  For alternatives in a similar price range I would look at the following -Magico A1 - aluminum cabinet and sealed and Magico's signature sound which is in the same tonal area as B&W.  Debatably...
Who likes the hegel but found something even better?
I have spent some time with the H390.  The closest I can think to it that has that clean and smooth sound, at a moderate step up, Chord's Ultima line.  It is clean and clear.  Highly resolving and accurate.  It is the tiniest bit forward.  At a le...
Recommendation for a highly resolving amp
Chord’s Ultima line is very resolving. They have also addressed historic brightness issues and these are more neutral than the old CM line. They also deliver big power, run cool and don’t take forever to sound good.I would also look at Boulder and...
Marantz AV7005 - Widow w/question
Move on from him.  I owned this unit (lost it in a divorce) and it is an unusually good pre/pro and has lingered on "best" lists long after it was discontinued.   There was a weird break in production due to the earthquake in Japan but it had noth...
Recommended streamers/servers?
I would check out the Antipodes S40.  Sound is very clean sounding and delivers a great signal to your DAC.  They have a very good USB connection and it definitely facilitates getting the most out of your DAC.  It is a nice unit and has a clear ...
Bought mono blocks, now spkr cables too long
So long as the cables are shielded, coiling is not a big deal.  Huge problem with unshielded cable.  You make a good point though that shorter cables are far more appropriate with mono-blocks.
Speaker and amp pairing
Tonal profile, sensitivity, impedance and recommended power rating are largely what you need to consider though recommended power rating is less of a concern than you might think.all of this needs to be taken in context of your room and your taste...
