new Eva Cassidy "Somewhere"
Listened to "Somewhere" last night, and agree with much of what has been said in this thread so far. The people who compiled this were certainly scouring the archives. Still, it is Eva C. I don't think the song choices showed off her vocal talents...
So whats your favorite music themed movie?
As no one else seems to be supporting it, I'm going to give another vote (remember: vote early, vote often) to "Death in Venice".
Mendelssohn string quintets
Jhold--thanks in turn for the recommendation. As for M'sohn chamber music, I only have a disc of the quartets, and one of the--yes, great--Octet. So this will come in nicely.

An Audiophile's journey
My take on the popularity of SETs was that it was driven, at least in part, by the first several years of digital recording (whether that recording ended up on LP or CD is beside the point). The first several years of DDD were atrocious: digititis...
The eternal quandary
John Atkinson and others have demonstrated that a high percentage of "popular" recordings issued nowadays are highly compressed. This is the work of the mixing/mastering engineer, and this is how that person wanted them to sound and to be released...
The eternal quandary
Mike--I totally agree, but as you say, it's a mental trick that may be easier for some of us than others. Even if one starts out a session in mental mode #2, something can happen that jolts you out of it. That's the experience that started this th...
