Thanks to all for most helpful responses!Combining recommendations, we have a great shortlist here to start working through.
big rig vs. the second system
I guess the scientific answer would be to temporalily install the main system where the secondary one is, and listen and compare. But as there are stairs involved, and some very heavy equipment, I don't think it's going to happen any time soon.

You guys may well be right. I don't know enough about psycho-acoustic phenomena to be able to confirm or refute. The problem, as I'm hearing it, may well only actually be over a narrow band, but the mild "veiling" effect that I'm talking about cer...

Jazz Piano Trio / Spanish Guitar
Here's a real strong recommendation.Jason Vieaux, Guitar Recital, Naxos 553449Wonderful performance, wonderful recording. Really shines on a good system.Plays mainly Spanish "classical" composers, but they all still have that "Spanish" flavour. Me...
new Eva Cassidy "Somewhere"
Listened to "Somewhere" last night, and agree with much of what has been said in this thread so far. The people who compiled this were certainly scouring the archives. Still, it is Eva C. I don't think the song choices showed off her vocal talents...
So whats your favorite music themed movie?
As no one else seems to be supporting it, I'm going to give another vote (remember: vote early, vote often) to "Death in Venice".
Mendelssohn string quintets

So whats your favorite music themed movie?
I forgot Death In Venice: fabulous film, superlative music.
So whats your favorite music themed movie?
Wot? No one mentioned yet "Tous les matins du monde"!Or, come to that, High Fidelity?
An Audiophile's journey
However you can make a speaker pretty much independent of amplification by making it "active". You mean like ATCs and PMCs?
Any Audiophile recording of The Planets?
Avoid: John Eliot Gardner on DG.
The eternal quandary
From an epistemological point of view, the whole field of audio reproduction is fraught with a myriad of problems. Actually, it's a miracle that we can agree about anything! From the recording venue, the position of the microphones in the hall, th...
An Audiophile's journey
RWW--this is an old, tired topic that doesn't need to be rehearsed again here. And SNS has set the record straight. My earlier post was meant as a comment on the vicissitudes of audio enthusiasms, not as a comment on the intrinsic merits (though ma...
The latest flavour of the month speaker
Will the Spectron III (right now, panegyrics everywhere) go the way of the Bel Canto, or will it survive and thrive? What do you think?
