Anyone tried the original Playstation 1 for CD? Okay, I know this is an ancient thread but I didn't want to start yet another playstation thread...When someone says it takes 2 days of warmup to reach peak sound--is that simply being turned on or is that with the CD being played/read?
Integrated amp: jumpers versus cables I do notice that the 3,000 NAD integrated amp also uses metal jumpers. I find that curious (I mean, if IC's sound better).
What, if any, component to upgrade? Advice? I second the subwoofer suggestion. I added one a couple of years back. The improvement seems to somehow go beyond the bass extension (my monitors are rated down to 40HZ). The sound seems more natural, more complete now. I may go for a more powerfu...
Do expensive cables/wires REALLY make a difference You may be higher-end than me--I have a modest system. I can hear a difference between the lowest end cables and better ones. For me it's not worth it to step up to the really expensive ones. If you've got truly high end amp/speaker/source compone...
Integrated amp: jumpers versus cables It has metal jumpers--I think they may already be an upgrade from the originals, not sure. I have twice read reviews of this same amp which recommended going to IC's.I"m just looking for the best connection possible (without spending an arm and a ...
What did you own in the 60's? ca. 1967, 15 years old--I had a Magnavox system (IA/TT/spkrs)with headphones, which I used a lot. My parents were in heaven with the 'phones. They bought two of my brothers similar systems the following Christmas.
Cartridge upgrade? I've been reading reviews and forum comments on these carts. My concern with the Grado is this: not enough detail. My present Stanton cartridge yields an ill-defined bass that I don't find appealing at all. Of course I don't want harshness either. ...
Cartridge upgrade? Additional info:I have learned my favorite local shop has Grado Gold, Rega Bias 2 and Ortofon Red (and Blue).I would prefer to give them the business and to have them assist in the setup unless there's a strong reason to go with a cartridge which ...

Should I bother to try a subwoofer? Also, the F112 mentioned costs far more than my mid-fi budget allows. I paid 425 + tax for the used REL.
Should I bother to try a subwoofer? Wolf, I tried the sub facing towards me and it did not sound good, so I don't think I'll have the controls against the wall (unless I move to another house, and even then, who knows...)Marty, you're probably right, but once again, the expense.Clar...
Should I bother to try a subwoofer? Yeah, Marty, I did think about that. Trying to be better in my old age! And, I trust my ears-- as a musician and teacher I've relied on them. I've done multitrack mixing, live mixing and things which make me focus on various aspects of sound and li...
Should I bother to try a subwoofer? I'm sure the Velo electronic setup is great, but it's a bit of a budget-buster for me.I've spent parts of three days listening and tweaking and am happy enough with it that I decided to take the plunge and buy the REL. I'm sure I'll continue to ma...
Should I bother to try a subwoofer? So...I am auditioning an old REL Q150E over the weekend. It's and interesting process if I don't get to manic about it. Lots of knob twisting and changing of music. I'm honestly not sure I like what I hear all of the time. It seems I keep lowering...
Should I bother to try a subwoofer? Many thanks to all who responded--I've learned a lot and will be actively looking for a sub. Unfortunately, in the meantime the Strata III has sold (he who hesitates is last), so I'll be searching the archive for threads on good mid-fi subs that m... |
