How did "Oh Mercy" end up sounding so great?
Rebbi, I think a lot of it is a matter of placing instruments in the mix, left to right. Sometimes when you're mixing things can sound cluttered or distorted, then you move one or more parts a bit and the sound can suddenly "breathe." With all the...
Beethoven Symphonies - best perf + sonics on CD
I have to disagree about classical music being "composer's music"--I'd rather hear the Guarneri Quartet playing anything than most other quartets playing the finest the repertoire has to offer. As a matter of fact, it's with the "top shelf" pieces...
Which songs or musical standards have haunted you?
John Coltrane playing Soul Eyes or Naima. The performance is as important as the song in this case--I've heard lots of versions of Naima (by other performers) that didn't come close.
First favorite tune
I honestly don't remember. Music was always there. I know the first LP was "All Summer Long" by the Beach Boys. But I had 45's before that and always had music in my head. Some interesting answers already posted, good idea for a thread.
"When Records Ruled The World"...BBC Documentary
Thanks for the link, excellent stuff. I don't agree with every single factoid or point of emphasis, but very well done (no big surprise, BBC!)
Movie "Crazy" life story of Hank Garland
I saw it a few weeks ago and was pretty disappointed with it overall, though I was interested in the story. The man left quite a mark on American music of the time. I listen to that solo album (with a young Gary Burton and Joe Morello) a good bit....

Beethoven Violin Sonatas---favorites and recs
I like the Szyering/Rubinstein recordings--not sure if they did the whole cycle, but I love the ones I have.
The Moving Sidewalks
Great band, I remember their singles on KILT-AM in Houston.I saw them open for the Doors and they were sensational. Not sure about the legality of the explosives they used for their finale, but it was a very effective way to close. I eventually re...
Which N AD?? or maybe Marantz
I don't mean to sound like Mr. Smartypants, but if it's between "very clear and clean--focused" versus "kind of dark and not much HF extension" then perhaps you've answered your own question(?)Good luck with your decision.
Good power/Bad Power
Elizabeth, your comment about dimming the lights takes me back to when I had a heftier system in the 70s--in one house I in which I lived the lights would dim whenever I switched on my power amp (McIntosh 2300).When I bought this system I installe...
Amplifiers:A Keeper for Life. Do you know of one ?
Tobb, with all due respect, he's talking about a 51-year-old unit. How far back did they fall from grace?
