Another musician has died
AP reports today that original Airplane member Signe Anderson (who preceded Grace Slick) passed away, also 74, on the same day as Paul Kantner.  She left the band when she realized that raising her child on the road was not going to work.  She's o...
Fed up with people making noise at classical shows
When I go to chamber concerts in a 750-seater where I live, I sometimes sit closer or further from the stage depending on how much "hall sound" I want.  It is a little louder close up, but that's not a problem with small groups.  Orchestra concert...
In a lot of these threads people say without the room being treated
Before we moved in we did renovations on this house.  I used to often walk around warming up on my violin in the open area where the stereo is now.   It sounded fantastic.  I first set up my stereo in my teaching studio, a small, nearly square roo...
What do you miss about old school hip hop music and why?
Whoa, that's a lot of tracks, thanks.  I'll jump in ASAP.
Another musician has died
Definitely true about Surrealistic Pillow--still high on my list.  I did listen to "Blows" a few hours ago and remembered why I only have listened to one song from that LP in the years since it came out.  But he did make an important contribution ...
What do you miss about old school hip hop music and why?
calvinj, you and I listen to some of the same stuff outside rap.  I especially like that you're into Lightning Hopkins, I think he was amazing (I was lucky enough to hear him live in the early 70's).  We've mentioned "The Revolution Will not be Te...
Is the main reason audio equipment depreciates so much is
yes.
I miss the Audio classified ads of the 70's and 80's in the newspaper
jetrexpro, it’s not necessarily an age thing. I was in my 20’s when rap/hip-hop emerged and I’m more inclined to like or accept it now than then. It’s not my thing, or hasn’t been so far.I could name a lot of pop music artists, mostly in rock (whi...
Another musician has died
My favorite thing he did was the cover of Rosalie Sorrel's "Baby Tree" with Jerry Garcia on banjo.  I hope to give "Blows Against the Empire" a spin later today--first time in decades, I'm sure.
I am really disappointed with the hip-hop enthusiasts on Audiogon
I put on phones and checked out Mrs. Jackson based on the double recommendation above.  Good music on the chorus, but I don't think I'll be giving it a second listen--so much better stuff to listen to out there (not necessarily current stuff).  Gr...
Is it possible to be an audiophile and be happy with what you have
Very content right now with my system.  One major upgrade in recent years.  Would love to experiment more with different cables but I'm happy enough with the sound now that I realize it might be futile/pointless.  Probably will try to tweak a bit ...
Noticed the Patriot Act's effects on PayPal?
bdp24,preach, brother, preach!(with Elizabeth Warren as VP, just to hedge against assassination attempts)
When rap came out 30 years ago I thought it was just a fad
ps, he and calvinj have each started multiple threads and appear to be arm-wrestling over the merits of rap.  It's gotten into discussions of racism and elitism.  I didn't say it at the time but I felt the thread about snooty audiophiles was actua...
When rap came out 30 years ago I thought it was just a fad
But that's not the issue here--the issue here is whether it's proper to call someone a racist based on comments made about music.  That's some pretty heavy extrapolation.
Neutral electronics are a farce...
I've done a little mixing, some with Yamaha NS-10s.  I think of them as a critical-listening speaker, not a listening-for-pleasure speaker.  I'd be curious to hear from the pros as to whether that's a valid distinction.I know one thing:  when I'm ...
