Eric Clapton reveals this week of his declining health
When I think of his work I think mostly of what he did in the 60's, which is hard to touch--so many fine solos of the "wish I could've done that" variety.  Derek & the Dominoes has its moments.  After that the high points are Unplugged and Fro...

Greatest Rock Drummers
"Clapton did all the lead guitar work on two tracks, "While my Guitar Gently Weeps" and "Yer Blues"I'm fairly certain that "Yer Blues" has two lead guitar parts, neither of which was played by Eric Clapton.  If you know otherwise, please cite the ...
Greatest Rock Drummers
Which brings to mind the versatile Zak Starkey, son of Ringo, who has played with The Who and Oasis, among others.  Vastly different styles and yet he's their go-to-guy.  Supposedly both bands offered to make him a full member and he declined.
What’s in your system today that you also had 10 years ago?
Speakers (Dynaudio) and tuner (Denon/Japan). Tuner has been overhauled in the last few years but is essentially the same unit from the 80's.
Dynaudio vs Harbeth vs ProAc
When I upgraded my system years ago the two best speakers I heard were the Dynaudio Special 25 and ProAc Response SC-1.  I did listen to some larger and more expensive rigs but those were the ones that hit me where I lived.  I haven't yet had the ...
Your last concert was to see who and when?
John McLaughlin, Jimmy Herring and their bands--separately and then together (playing tunes from the Mahavishnu Orchestra songbook) at the Paramount Theater in Austin, 11/30/17.  Supposedly it was Mclaughlin's farewell tour.  He's still at the top...
Who makes budget speaker cables which are truly “good” or “exceptional” in quality?
You simply have to try different things and see what you like. I have twice tried different Kimber cables and both times I preferred my Canare starquad cheapies to them.  But that's my room, my rig and my ears.  YMMV.

Musician vs. audiophile
stargazer3, when I was in school something was tossed out to me that I have believed ever since:  the method behind a composition matters not one bit.  All that counts is whether or not the piece is good.
Why does all new pop music sound the same?
Musical inbreeding, encouraged by the industry which is convinced that there's a formula based on recent trends.  But there's plenty of good off-mainstream stuff to hear if you do your homework and there's bound to be someone refreshing and good t...
Recordings with incredible effects or imaging that we may not know about

Filling speaker stands: sand, lead, steel, rice. Full, half, etc?
I put lead shot in my stands and filled the gaps with sand.
Speaker distance
It seems to me that the ideal distance between the speakers varies from one recording to another depending on the mix and the instrumentation.  I notice with solo piano  and  with string quartets that no one setup satisfies every recording.  So I ...
