Which band IS really America's Greatest (rock & roll band)?
All things considered, I think CCR for several reasons, including their diverse American influences and their crossover appeal.  I'm pretty sure a lot of country and soul/R&B fans gave them "thumbs up" and some even bought their records. If lon...
... POORLY RECORDED SONGS THAT ...
It doesn't hurt my ears to listen to it, and part of the charm is the low-budget way it was done, but I wish "The Basement Tapes" (Bob Dylan and the Band) was better recorded.  That said, I think Garth Hudson did a good job with the limited resour...
What is the first album you purchased, and do you still have it?
"All Summer Long," The Beach Boys.  I still have it but I'd be afraid to play it for fear of damaging my stylus.  I'm sure it was abused in the first few years of its existence.  I have some of the tracks on CD and still listen to them occasionally.
Greatest debut album
bdp24, I agree about Jack's bass playing.  You may know he was the principal reason Grace Slick quit the Great Society and joined Jefferson Airplane.  It's a shame his bass part on the Electric Ladyland LP got horribly lost in the mix.  I'd love t...
Greatest debut album
I can easily agree with a half dozen previously listed LP's.  The first Hot Tuna album, while not a commercial smash, was excellent.
If you could just pick one instrument that you think sounds best on your speakers
I chose my speakers  largely for the way they reproduce vocals, but I think piano sounds better (more authentic/convincing).  Dynaudio Contour 1.3 mkII
Thinking about a new, lower end CD Player
I was very pleased with the NAD I bought a few years ago (same price range).  Then I picked up a used OPPO DVD player that was appreciably thinner (I have cramped quarters) for 20 bucks.  It sounded every bit as good as the NAD (and had a volume c...
A song murdered by someone.
I love the Beatles covers.  I agree with you about the Van Halen cover you mention.
Suggestions for Solo Violin Recordings
I would avoid the Hilary Hahn solo Bach CD--she was in her mid-teens when it was done and I think she should have waited another ten years or more.  She's great with other stuff, IMO.
Suggestions for Solo Violin Recordings
There are many recordings of the Paganini Caprices (#24 is accessible and well-known).  One particularly good one is by Michael Rabin.  For something a little more modern try the Bartok unaccompanied sonata or the Ysaye sonatas.  Ruggiero Ricci di...
What is the most memorable concert that you had attended so far?
My "big three:" Mahavishnu Orchestra and Frank Zappa bands (separately, one month apart), spring of ’73 at Armadillo World Headquarters, Austin TX. Bill Evans Trio, probably 1980, at Lyceum, North Texas State University, Denton. I saw/heard many o...
Your 3 Favorite Songs
noromance, I get you--ask me tomorrow and you might get a different list. These three are "timely," coincidentally:I Guess I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times (Beach Boys)Long, Long Time--(Linda Ronstadt)Tomorrow is a Long Time--(Bob Dylan)
Mountain and Cactus
Two good bands, to be sure, but not in the same league with Cream and Led Zep IMHO.
BEST FEMALE VOCAL EVER
I'd give it to Linda Ronstadt for her versatility--so many pop styles plus mariachi and Gilbert & Sullivan.  Just amazing.
Which band IS really America's Greatest (rock & roll band)?
bdp24, thanks for that info on Traffic's lineup changes.  I need to pay more attention to the CD notes ( but the print is so tiny!).
