Help with picking the right phono pre for the rest of my system please! A New Reel to Reel Tape Deck? I believe that it's going to be Revox-Studer. The Horch Music R2R titles shown (e.g. the 6 album Oscar Peterson) are being sold under the Revox brand.
Reel to Reel uses - Norman and Livin_262002Thanks. The guru of Sony APR-5000 series machines is Richard Hess. There is a yahoo users group run by Richard, which has all the manuals etc uploaded. The APR-5000 series are really good and very good value compared to the ...
LONDON Decca, Tzar DST and similar cartridges I have been a Decca aficionado since the late 70s. I still have my Garrott Brothers Gold, an old Maroon and a FFSSMkIV C4E rebuilt by John Wright. The vintage C4E is just stunning, significantly better than my Garrott Brothers cartridge (retipped...
Reel to Reel uses - Since getting into R2R again, I find that I hardly play my turntable (Platine Verdier, GT Audio Battery PSU, Schroeder Model 2/Allaerts MC1B & Hadcock 228/Decca FFSS MkIV). I have 3 R2R decks, all 2 track and 15 IPS capable - Sony APR-5002, St...
Stand out phono stages The new TRON Convergence phone stage at USD 1.5k GBP 1k is unbelievably good at the money - nearly as good as my USD 7k (£4.5k) TRON Seven Reference. I heard one of the first production ones a month ago. Great sound quality with an ultra short sig...
Nakamichi 505 or the Dragon ? A Dragon. If this were a question about the Dragon or a CR7, that would be a tricky question, as both have their devotees. Anyway I'm delighted with my Dragon, which has just been serviced and modified by Alex Nikitin (ANT4066 on tapeheads).
favorite phono cartridge 1960s Decca (London) FFSS Mk IV C4E, rebuilt by John Wright, current London cartridge designer. Just a stunningly live cartridge with great dynamics.
recommended phono preamp for $2500? How about the new TRON Convergence at GBP900 for MM or GBP1000 for MC? It's the new entry level phono stage from TRON, which promises much of the vaunted TRON Seven performance at a very reasonable price.
Buying a used cartridge...tell us your tale. Budget for a rebuild and you'll be ok. I waited 3 years to find a Decca/London FFSS MkIV C4E, knowing that I could get it rebuilt by John Wright, the current London cartridge designer and manufacturer.
Cartridges for Mayware Mk IV Tonearms Depending on your budget, something like an Ortofon 2M Black, Goldring 1042 or higher end Nagaoka would be excellent. Alternatively a Decca/London cartridge would work really well with a bit of fluid damping on the tonearm.
What's the greatest bargain in SET these days? Another option might be a TRON Atlantic, if you are considering buying new. 8W 300B with great build quality. Having heard it, it is every bit as good as Graham Tricker's other valve power amps.A friend of mine in the UK has just bought one to go ...
Phonostage: Wavac vs Doshi vs Tron I bought a new TRON Reference earlier this year and am really happy. Exquisite (really exquisite) build quality and very natural sounding- not lush or warm at all. Some might call it un-tube like, but it just sounds natural and musical.
Best 300B SET Consider the TRON Discovery if you have deep pockets, or maybe the new TRON Atlantic, which is more modestly priced.
Wet Cleaning the Stylus Wet clean your stylus only when truly necessary. Wet clean your LPs on a vacuum RCM and you will hardly ever need to clean your stylus. Sounds better and it will save you having the tip falling off as the glue bond weakens with repeated cleaning. |
