Why no interest in reel to reel if you're looking for the ultimate sound?
@scar972 You should have bought the Sony APR5003. It's the real sleeper in the R2R world. Spares are a problem, unlike Studer and Otari. The multi-pin connector for the headblock is totally unobtanium. But the Sony has a really lovely transport and...

@scar972 In my main system downstairs, I have a Studer A820 1/2 inch and a 1/4 inch Otari MTR12 with a Dolby 363 NR unit, containing Dolby SR/ Dolby A cards.https://i.vgy.me/Rye2Pf.jpghttps://i.vgy.me/OfKMvT.jpghttps://i.vgy.me/0tcXOh.jpgIn my stu...
Why no interest in reel to reel if you're looking for the ultimate sound?
"As much as I can appreciate the best quality pure analog, today’s digital is so so-oooo good that I can’t spend $450 for the tape."Indeed that would be true if the digital file is as good as the master tape. I can testify to that, having archived...
Why no interest in reel to reel if you're looking for the ultimate sound?
I got into R2R seriously about 6-7 years ago, after lots of help from a good friend Stewart Emmings, who sadly passed away from cancer at 49. Stew was the chief archivist and serviced all the vintage video tape and audio tape machines at the Briti...
2020 update : JC Verdier La Platine
@ledoux1238 You could try emailing Graham Tricker at GT Audio/TRON. He is very helpful and might consider building one, if the metal work is available. Yes, you do have to drill a small hole into the motor housing.
2020 update : JC Verdier La Platine
I've been using a Platine for over 15 years now and cannot see myself changing it. I have a GT Audio battery PSU running into a standard motor housing (with a small modification to allow a Lemo cable to power the motor) and the thread drive. The B...
End-Game RCM thoughts/advice
Shame you're not interested in a Keith Monks. I have a 30+ year old MkII Keith Monks. It is built like a tank and clean really well and quickly - 90-120 secs per side. It's reasonably quiet (much quieter than the VPI 16.5) and will probably outlas...
Woot! Decca cartridge bargain
@noromance Here’s a photo of the original worksheet dated 1981. Mine has had a fine line retip from JW since, but is otherwise as the Brothers left it in 1981.https://i.vgy.me/2o0kE4.jpg
Woot! Decca cartridge bargain
The original Garrott rebuilds used a Weinz Parabolic styles profile, as opposed to the Paratrace. I still have mine stating this on the original paperwork from the long departed brothers. Here's a review from my old boss Ken Kessler - we worked to...
Best Phono amp under $2000.
How about a TRON Convergence? would be in your budget, if you are in the UK. Not sure how much it is in the USA. You could ask Jeff Catalano at High-water Sound in NYC, as he is the USA TRON distributor. The TRON Convergence has been used recently...
Pre-recorded Reel-to Reel tapes
To get the very best out of R2R replay, you have to be an*l about set up. I have a reasonable size collection of 15 IPS 2 tr record company distribution masters (eg Beatles - Revolver; Miles - Sketches of Spain; Lou Reed - Transformer etc) and saf...
Digitizing Vinyl; Suggestions Please
The quality of the A2D converter is crucial to obtain the best quality transfer. That's why I suggested the Prims Sound, as they are renowned for making some of the very best A2D converters for the studio market. The Focusrite Scarletts are very mu...
Digitizing Vinyl; Suggestions Please
@1graber2 Once you have digitised your LP collection, you can resell the Prism Sound. Given the high demand in studios for the Lyra 2, I suspect that you would lose less than USD500 if you did that.
Digitizing Vinyl; Suggestions Please
If you have the budget, buy a Prism Sound Lyra 2. Prism Sound make some of the very best ADCs, which are used in recording studios across the world. The Lyra 2 has the same ADCs as their more expensive Atlas and Titan interfaces. The Lyra 2 also a...
Can we finally put Reel to Reel out of its misery? Put it to rest people.
Glupson,I think you have got a bit confused about the "vault". Sony, Warners, BMG all have vast temperature and humidity controlled vaults, where they keep the original multi-track and stereo mix down MASTERS. These never leave the record company....
