Liquid Stylus Cleaners I use a tiny drop of Stylast on a fine artist’s sable size 0 or 00 brush, when required. As I clean all my records on a Keith Monks RCM, I only need to wet clean the stylus rarely. Wet clean the records and the stylus keep clean.
Reel to reel , is it real the hype! @newtoncr blank tape may not be cheap, but high end R2R is not a budget hobby. If you have a production master of something like the Beatles' Revolver, it is something to be cherished and cared for. Every pass you make over the tape heads will deg...
Reel to reel , is it real the hype! @newtoncr The Otari MTRs sound great, even with stock electronics - excellent transport as well. I have a 1/4 inch MTR12 and it’s a great deck.If you really decide to get into R2R and "master tapes", I would advise that you buy TWO machines, the a...
Age of masters @mijostyn There were hundreds of thousands of tapes across the world, most of which ended up in a skip back in the late 80s/early 90s, as record companies moved to CD. There are a number of places in Europe and the USA, where people saved these fr...
Age of masters I have about 100 production master tapes in my collection - these would have been copies taken straight off the original stereo mix down by the record company and sent across the world to record pressing plants. Local record pressing plants would ...
How old is your cartridge? My daily driver is my 1967 Decca FFSS Mk IV C4E - just came back 2 weeks ago from John Wright (London cartridge designer) after an overhaul and new Paratrace tip. Whilst that was away, I was using my 1981 Garrott Brothers Decca Gold.
Anyone buys master tape dubs ? @inna When I source a new production master, I duplicate the master onto a) new tape and b) as a digital 192/24 .wav file.As tomic601 mentioned, it is really important to make sure that you reproduce the music, as it was intended. I’m a firm belie...

Why no interest in reel to reel if you're looking for the ultimate sound? This thread has been dormant for a while. This is my post Christmas treat - archiving my 15 IPS CBS master of Floyd’s Wish You Were Here - 192/24 digital archive via a Prism Sound Lyra 2 A2D and a Dolby SR 15 IPS 1/4 in copy onto new RTM LPR90 tap...
Phonostage recommendations under $3K TRON Convergence - used to great effect by Jeff at High-water Sound in his recent system at RMAF, garnering much praise. Also available, I believe, directly from TRON in the UK
To clean or not to clean? I wet clean every record (including the brand new ones) before it is first played, and inserted into a new inner sleeve (if it's a second hand purchase).
2020 update : JC Verdier La Platine @vuckovic Would you mind sharing the dimensions for the 1/2 inch tape drive pulley for the stock motor spindle? I've got stacks of half inch audio tape in my home. Do you just pull off the standard brass V pulley and push the replacement delrin on...
Garrott vs Soundsmith I'm a fan of the Garrott P77i as well. I bought one a couple of years ago, and it is excellent. My first Garrott cartridge was in in 1981, when the Brothers modified my Decca Gold. I still have that with the original paperwork.
Why no interest in reel to reel if you're looking for the ultimate sound? @cd3181) Yes, a high quality digital transfer of a 15 ips tape is pretty much the same as the tape original. Prism Sound have had a good reputation for their A2D converters, and they sound very natural with plenty of air.2) Most distribution maste... |
