12AT7 tubes
It takes all kinds, I guess. I've been living with all SS gear for the last 20 or so years (good stuff, though, not like a lot of the bleached stuff that you find a lot in the SS world). But with my move to the FetValve, and a Pass X1 preamp (whic...

"Mullards are the best I have heard... Can change systems from nice to incredible"Undertow, what's your definition of incredible? I ask because tube rolling seems to be a way for people to get the sound they "want". I have an AVA FetValve 550, whi...
Purist or Kubala-which to buy for entire system
"As far as I know, all Purist cables marked Dominus or Dominus Ferox (and no other designation) are USA cables. ALL Purist Aqueous Anniversary and ALL Purist Anniversary cables are identical, regardless of where in the world they are sold. There h...
Where are the full-function preamps?
Don't forget Quicksilver. Their Full Function Preamp (that's actually its name!) is one to consider.
PAD Venustas
Hmm, this may be a thread in and of itself, but I find this of great interest. I've been very happy with PAD Venustas between my preamp and amp (Pass X1, FetValve 550EXR), but I use Acoustic Zen Silver Ref II between my source and preamp. Is it po...
PAD Venustas
"Oddly enough, Europe seems to favor Aqueous Anniversary and the USA seems to favor Venustas."Albert, why do you think this is?
pass labs x0.2 "pro's and cons's"
Keith, I have the X1 and agree with Zenaissance. I do not find it uninvolving at all. It is, however, not something that will "add" any of its own character to the sound, which is the way I like it. If you're looking for a "sound" you won't find i...
Preamp: AVA T8, Quicksilver, Mapletree 2A SE?
Rockin', apologies in advance if I've asked you this in a different thread, but by any chance did you own the EXR before upgrading to the Ultra? I have the 550EXR and would love to hear from an owner about how the Ultra sounds in comparison.
XM or Sirius
Same as what's already been said. I have Sirius in my car, but have had a large number of rental cars which typically give you XM. IMO XM has better jazz and blues stations, with deeper playlists than Sirius. XM also has deeper punk and alt playli...
Reference Transports: An overall perspective
"every CD player, even the cheapest one, has C1 and C2 CIRC error correctors"Alex, I don't know about audio CD players in this regard, but the context of my comments was WRT computer CD drives. And in that environment this is not always the case. ...
Reference Transports: An overall perspective
"Also, even though with computer based audio certain "error free" software can be used, this does not exactly mean that there are no transport device READ errors."Alex, if one uses (and correctly sets up) Exact Audio Copy (EAC) along with a good C...
Best Place to get Levinson 27.5 Amp repaired
Cello, be prepared to pay a Not To Exceed (NTE) price upfront. Your actual price of repair may or may not come up to that paid amount. But for Levinson and Madrigal gear the NTE price can get pretty high. The NTE for my Proceed PDT3 is almost twice...
In search of more power ... MF? V Alstine?
Danny, good luck if you get one in your house to try! I'll certainly be hoping to hear from you and how it sounds in your system. I have to admit I'm a little nervous; my gear is mostly out of the "main" mainstream. Not too often that something I ...
In search of more power ... MF? V Alstine?
Danny, I own the FetValve 550EXR. The quality of the amp is excellent. Frank van Alstine does not use solid gold binding posts, or lamb placenta chassis linings to absorb EMI. He builds well designed components without pomp, but in a very well exe...
Opinions on speaker cable upgrade
John, on some of the other threads which discussed the AA interconnects there was the general agreement that they take upwards of several hundred hours to break in. Do you have any thoughts regarding the break in time for the AA speaker cables?
