Speakers for newbie
4zoranss,If I was you, I'd be looking at used speakers. That way, you can try them and if you don't like them you can sell them at a minimal loss. You said that you have a medium sized room. Is this going to be a dedicated listening room or a famil...

eMax,The stated specs for your receiver rate the amp section at 110wpc with only two channels driven. I also noticed that the whole component weighs only 26lbs. I don't know, but I'm sensing that there isn't much of a power supply there. My two ch...
Does The Squeezebox Touch Have a Worthy Successor?
I really don't know about that Bryston unit. Just looking at the specs, I'm getting the feeling that most of the price is going to be for the name. For the money, you could get into a modded Mac Mini, build a CAPS server, get a modded Sonos unit or...
Upgrade Minuets to Supreme Plus?
Wow, I'm surprised tht no one has replied to this questtion.I supposed I'll be able to answer my own question pretty soon. I now have a set of the Minuet Supreme Pluses on the way.
Nad c 162
Unless I'm mistaken, that's about $60 US dollars. At that price, I'd buy it just to have it as a spare. I bought mine almost two years ago and paid $300 for it.It is a good piece of NAD equipment. It may not be the best of anything, but considerin...

Rootsrockreggae,The reason I asked about the listening room is because speakers do require setting up; meaning that they need to be placed in a particular location and orientation relative to each other in your room to sound their best.I've never ...
Best Integrated Amplifier for B&W 685
I don't know that the OP is even paying attention any longer, but I've had the 685s. They are good speakers with a signature sound. In my system I found them a bit too bright and even edgy sometimes. The mid range was also not as full as I would h...
Do I need a DAC?
You could always just try a DAC and see if it does anything for you. Amazon sells several, to include Peachtree, Schiit, Musical Fidelity, etc. Just check the return policy for the vendor that you buy from. I believe that Wyred4Sound has a home tr...
Accessing music files
I've found the best way to access music files is to have them on an NAS. This way, you don't need a PC to access your music. How you get the files to your pre amp is the subject of much discussion. An inexpensive way to get into it is to add an Appl...
DAC for entry level system
Since no one has mentioned it, I'll throw out the Emotiva XDA-2 DAC. I don't think that anyone will say that it's the best sounding DAC out there, but it does sound good and offers a lot of flexibility for the price tag of $400.When I first got my...
Does The Squeezebox Touch Have a Worthy Successor?
I don't know why this didn't occur to me before, but the AppleTV works pretty well too. For the $100 price tag, it's a pretty capable piece of gear.I played quite a bit of music through it and it sounds pretty good. I just don't use it for music m...
Do I need a DAC?
Oscarrr, you don't need to be playing 24 bit files to be able to appreciate a better DAC. Most of my files are standard 16/44 and I find an external DAC necessary for the low cost sources that I use.
1st time poster looking for speaker recommendation
What size is your listening room going to be? Is this going to be a dedicated listening room or more like the den where the stereo will just happen to be? Are there going to be space/size limitations or are you going to have free reign to place th...
Do I need a DAC?
Whether you'd get appreciably better sound quality from an external DAC depends a lot on the source material too.Are you playing hi res files, CD rips or just 128kbps iTunes downloads?

Roots,What size is your listening room? Is it a listening room or is it the family den? I won't argue that the Tektons are good speakers, but the one or two reviews that I read indicated that they were a bit picky about setup and placement, if you...
