Dipole Asymmetry
I think that many people get great sound from MLs placed 3 or 4 feet out from the front wall. Martin Logan recommends 2 to 3 feet. I don’t think having your rack behind one speaker would be that big a problem. You can experiment with diffusion on ...
Telefunken in Disguise?
The Tubemonger Library, a great resource for identifying tubes has a couple of pictures of Telefunken 12AU7s labelled Mazda Belvu here:http://www.tubemongerlib.com/gallery2/v/12AU7/Telefunken+12AU7A+ECC82+Smooth+Plate+Diamond+Bottom+Mazda+Belvu+La...
Tube for a Noob ???
You could try a PrimaLuna cd player.  These are full blown tube players, even using a tube for clocking.  Call Upscale Audio and have an idea about what you want the player to sound like in your system and Kevin Deal can probably tell you if  one ...
A nice read on tubes!
Great article.  If articles like this were printed in magazines or websites directed at younger people, we might be able to convert some earbud listeners into audiophiles. As far as tubes vs solid state, it just goes to show that there's no right o...
Climbing the Preamp ladder
Check out the Aesthetix Calypso.  It fits your criteria pretty well.
Esoteric X-01 vs K-05...
I haven't heard the X-01, the K-05 is a very good sounding player.  What I have read is that the X series are a little lean sounding, the K series are richer or more musical.  Which of these would work best for you I can't say.
Tinnitus worries...
The best suggestion I have is just accept that you have tinnitus and pay as little attention to it as possible. My tinnitus bothered me much more when it was at a much lower level than it's at now. Then I decided I just had to accept that it was g...
The demise of the music CD inevitable?
The demise of the music CD inevitable? Not in our lifetimes.  In the long run, all current formats will disappear, as will the Earth and Sun.
Best Preamp - NO preamp... (?)
Less parts does not necessarily mean better sound. If it did we would all be using the same minimal all-in-one system.  Reproducing recorded music is more complicated than that. However, if you enjoy  the sound of your system without a preamp, that...
Speakers with warm treble and good bass
Dalis have a nice warm sound and decent bass.  They're a pleasant sounding speaker.
Allman Brothers at Fillmore East, which one?
jafant,  check at the Steve Hoffman music forums for a discussion of the cds, etc.
Loudspeakers have we really made that much progress since the 1930s?
I just looked up the links that you provided, johnk. I have no problem at all with people listening to speakers from the 30s and saying that they prefer that sound above all other.I simply disagreed with what you appear to believe, that there has ...
High-Resolution Audio: You Can Hear Me Now
"trained test subjects could distinguish between formats approximately 60% of the time."Well, 60% correct is not knockin' it out of the park, but the equipment used and the listening conditions are not always ideal in these studies.
Loudspeakers have we really made that much progress since the 1930s?
OK johnk, You found a guy on ebay selling boxes without drivers, seller name: mymuseum, and a company that imports replica drivers (from China?) that are probably made with current materials and technology.  No crossovers or other necessary electr...
Loudspeakers have we really made that much progress since the 1930s?
johnk, Why do you have trouble understanding that 30s speakers may perform as well or better than current speakers FOR YOU and your listening preferences, but others find that much progress has been made since then and prefer current speakers. I’d...
