amp via transformer 220 - 110 a good idea?
Semi, you had disappointing results but you don't say anything about the transformer setup you were using. What was its power rating ( in VA, which are more or less equivalent to watts ), and its make ? How much power did your amp draw ? Malickia,...
amp via transformer 220 - 110 a good idea?
IF the transformer is big enough to handle twice the current draw of the amp (more wouldn't hurt) and of reasonable quality, you should notice no degradation in its sound. As a side benefit, you might well get extra noise reduction--useful if your...
Shanling/Music Hall CD Player repair
Charisma Audio is indeed the Canadian distributor for Shanling. They are a truly excellent company to deal with. However if Charisma (or perhaps PartsConnexion) were unable to help, I myself would try the Soundsmith in Peekskill, NY.http://www.sou...

Quiet, Reliable Hard Drive

Toe-in for Harbeth M30 in a narrow room?
FWIW a diffuser made of angled panels placed behind my speakers and close to the rear wall helped both image and midrange in my situation.
Aurum Cantus Liesure 2 SE Speakers
I had a pair of 2SEs for a while and liked them a lot. As Garryh says of his V3M, the woofer and tweeter integrated very well and the highs were unusually pure, extended and sweet. The low end was about as good as I've heard from a small box. It w...
Recommended first turntable?
The Systemdek design was a good one, and I would consider a IIx in good condition as my first low-budget choice... with the parts proviso, of course. However the design has been revived by Audio Note and it might be possible to source parts from t...
new to tubes
After having owned two EL34 push-pull amps, I would hazard a guess that the bass from these tubes has as much to do with other design elements as the tubes themselves. I would suspect the output transformers first of all.
Novice with vinyl & tapes needs help evaluating
Lurk eBay to find market prices, then offer your stock to a dealer at 40% less.Alternatively sell the whole lot to me except the moldy ones. I will tell you what it is all worth :)
Recommended first turntable?
If you do get an older (and/or cheaper) table make sure it is set up properly before you use it, or sooner or later it will damage your records. You also need to learn enough about it that you can keep it set up. (On a low budget, an experienced t...
Proper order of power cables and conditioner?
All of the power cables you mention are worth upgrading. The best bang for the buck is at the conditioner cable, because that feeds several pieces of the system at once.As for the relative merits of A) spending a big whack on the power conditioner...
Need help with my office system
Nice office system. Listening chair is much too close to the desk, though... :o)You would hear more detail in the music if the drivers were on a level with your ears, of course. About the only way to do that with your Arros would be to take out a ...
The Kids Are Alright
Thanks for this piece. Minor faults, nothing a proofread or two wouldn't fix, but major pertinence.
