First tube integrated amp
I use and really like Audio Space amplifiers. The AS-3i EL34 integrated lists at about $1400. There is also a larger integrated built around the KT88 tube for more money. And if you want a remote, the Galaxy 34 is a nice amp.
Help a new guy get started
My personal rule of thumb is different depending on what my intentions are.If I am spending my money to have music now, but would like to have a better system when I can afford it, I put more of the budget into the source. If am spending for the la...
Simple & Effective Conversion Software
If you are going to be resampling the files in software, use any application with the iZotope 64-bit algorithm. I use Wave Editor, which is a Mac program. If all you are going to be doing is changing the envelope (FLAC to Apple Lossless for example...
Well Tempered Tonearm Problem
Note that you can buy turntables bearing the Well Tempered nameplate from two completely different companies. One is Stanalog, at the address Audiomax supplies above. They are the distributor of the successor to your Well Tempered Classic. The other...
Preamp Suggestions for my system
I would be interested in Hovland and Klyne.
Townhouse speaker dilemma
Of the ones on your list, I like the Living Voice the best. They resolve, and do both dynamics and timbres extremely well and they can take amps even better than the one you've got. Not to say yours is any too shabby, and the LVs like SimAudio to ...
Herbie's vs. Hal-O's, Tube Dampers whats good?
Herbie's Audio Lab is a manufacturer, HAL-O is a model they make. So they're all good.I have tried every model of ring-and-bumper-type tube damper Steve Herbelin makes or used to make and they all work very well indeed. Sadly, I have not found a c...
Upgrade Quandry - Who's on first?
Oh dear, now I think I've intrigued you. Well, no harm done I hope. The Klyne is solid-state, to start with. Which of course means nothing, it's not the technology but the implementation that counts. It is discontinued, like the SF, but went that ...
Upgrade Quandry - Who's on first?
Blueskiespbd, I know the Moon LP3. I think it is terrific value and would sound even better with a battery PS. So I wouldn't consider changing that at this point if your very nice system were mine.I do know that a preamp makes a huge difference in...
Upgrade Quandry - Who's on first?
Re preamp: no, not talking about the Moon--talking about the Sonic!Re biamping: IME one great amp beats two lesser ones, especially, especially, when the two lesser ones are biamped passively.
Upgrade Quandry - Who's on first?
There's a Classé Fifteen up for sale right now at exactly that price. Goodbye to biamping but a much better amp.Other ways to spend it:- an outboard DAC and a good 1.5m digital cable- get your tonearm rewired- battery power supply for the phonosta...
New Transport Suggestions for Bitstream DAC
If it were me I would be using a computer while I looked for a really good transport. Even with a cheap DAC my antique PowerBook is a truly decent source. Trouble with it is that tweaks make a difference. Things like cables, processor settings, so...
need suggestion about pre-amp, price around $5,000
You have some nice choices at that price, especially used. Klyne and Hovland come to my mind but there are lots more I haven't heard.Your requirements are not so uncommon, so why not start by making a long list? Look at the ads and archives here, ...
Tube amp, more low end
KT88s are generally more reputed to provide rock-type bass and drive than EL34s, but of course other factors in the amp come into play as well, notably the output transformers.I've been trying to get good bass--weighty, defined, fast, extended--fr...
Special birthday audio gift to yourself?
For my 50th I got a Linn LP12 and a shipping damage claim with UPS that took a full 12 months to resolve.Enjoyed that turntable (after it was fixed) for seven years, then changed to a mass-loaded design and would never go back.Happy birthday all !
