What do audiophiles want from a cable?
Well wax waves, I have heard little to no improvement over fairly mundane cable technology, in my system. I use Canare Starquad microphone cable for interconnect. For speaker cable I use Goertz when I'm not using an exotic solution which only work...
Best Capacitors for Crossovers
Technology before brand. There are two main types of quality caps: metallized, and film-and-foil. The former are cheaper, the latter better: by better, I mean smoother, more refined, more detailed.Dielectric thickness doesn't matter very much, but ...
What do audiophiles want from a cable?
Sorry, wax, don't quite understand a few things. First, exactly what components are you connecting? Digital source --> DAC --> Integrated amp --> amp ??? Or something else?Second, how does the sound improve? What are the characteristics o...
THE WALL---Why?
Should have said that toroids tend to growl when they are doing their job, so it's better to site them in a garage or utility room.
THE WALL---Why?
It's a matter of electrons. Specifically, how many electrons can get to your amp when there is a sudden draw. (The wave description is equally valid.) Engineers call this source impedance - ideally, you want a source with zero impedance, like a de...
What do audiophiles want from a cable?
Agreed Almarg. Well directed.Eric, I am lazier - after I built theoretically optimal cables (viz the Maxwell Equations) with gold plated, fine silver wire, vanishingly low dielectric absorption in a Faraday cage, and ETI connectors, and got little...
Your first component that was "special"
Tympani 1a, December 1973. Eventually added ARC SP3a and ARC active crossover. For the day, only Magic.
Telefunken in Disguise?
ebm, I too have a few "Telefunken" tubes that sound bad. However, of the 16 best 6922's I have ever heard, 16 are Telefunken. That includes US Amperex (including pinch waist), Dutch Amperex, Siemens, etc.
Finally stepping into the hobby after 30 years of watching from the sidelines
About your curtain, John.I don't think that will work for you - the curtain will simply absorb all sound, and may make the room sound dead. In my experience, two under appreciated techniques can work wonders: wall texture is very useful (think bas...
Must speakers have certain volume to sound convincing ?
I suspect it has a lot to do with how much damage your ears have sustained.
My final table , hopefully !
Orpheus, my experience is too limited. I’ve tried to move up a lot with each change, so that I have lived with only a half dozen TT in the last 20 years. Of course, I've auditioned quite a few, but that's not the same at all. Simplifying a bit, I ...
My final table , hopefully !
Further to the above, I should have noted that the Trans-Fi is made to order for this kind of test, in that the arm wand carries the cartridge and the azimuth adjustment. VTA and tangentiality settings are obvious. Thus when you change wands, your...

Cottguy, have you considered Atma-Sphere? Their designs have no output transformers. I owned a pair, and found them to be very clear and sweet, and very decorative in a retro way, with their 12 glowing tubes. People would often comment on them, ev...
My final table , hopefully !
How does the TT affect the sound? A bit like digital. To my ears, digital sounds dry and harsh compared to analogue. Turntables extend the spectrum towards the natural. Inexpensive and poorly designed TT tend to sound a bit harsh, accentuating each...
Turntable Platter Demagnetizing
Cast iron is actually quite a good platter material, in that it is less resonant than most materials. The trick is to keep it away from the cartridge, with, say, a 1 inch graphite upper platter. Nottingham Analogue does this, and it works very wel...
