Best used or new DAC under $3500
I have spent a bunch of time with the PS Audio DirectStream Junior (DSJ) and have a review coming out soon. The only other DAC in this discussion that I’ve heard is the Chord Dave. With the latest software update (Redcloud), I believe the DSJ come...
New system has fatiguing, harsh high frequency sounds. How to fix?
There are a lot of good suggestions here, I’ll just give my .02:- agreed this is way too much gear for a room of this size. Big speakers will do movies well but for music, smaller monitor speakers will likely do a better job.- agreed the combo of ...
Who has heard the new Pass XA25?
@bobheinatz I heard the XA25 briefly at CAS a few months ago. It was in a modest room, with a HPA-1 used as a preamplifier and I believe an Oppo source. Speakers were some Vienna Acoustics floorstanders that the Pass rep said "were what I found in...
Upgrading form Pass integrated amplifier to a better one
@denon1 not the same league as where you wound up but wondering if you’ve heard the Ayre AX5 twenty and how it might compare to the Pass?
Upgrading path from Merlin VSM black magic
@sstalwar old thread but did you end up getting new speakers? FYI I have the Silverline SR 17 Supreme in house and it is pretty much everything I hoped it would be vs. my Merlin TSM-MXe's. I'll probably listen to the Boleros next which I suspect w...
Full-sounding SS amps (besides Pass)
@pbnaudio - Hi Peter - I remember Marty DeWulf, whom I wrote for a number of years, was a big fan of your designs. They look amazing... if only you had something a little smaller, or better yet, my apartment were bigger. :-D@mitch2 I think MOSFET ...

Sorry, I should clarify - I'd like to focus on currently-active brands/models. I'm interested specifically in things I could potentially review on my blog (http://taww.co). So stuff that is commercially available and supported.(That said, used/reb...
Full-sounding SS amps (besides Pass)
Ah yes, Edge. I evaluated the Edge G6 for a good long period a while back, before Tom Maker sold the company and split off. It was the best SS amp I had heard up to that point (and still great by today’s standards, I bet). @marqmike I’d agree it g...
Full-sounding SS amps (besides Pass)
Has anyone here heard the Neodio integrateds? I seem to recall a Merlin owner stating it was the best amp they've heard on the VSM's, which makes me guess it's on the fuller side tonally.

Sad to see the McCormack line is no longer manufactured (I've been out of the loop a while) and SMc doesn't make an amp.  :(@dweller I didn't realize BAT made pure SS designs, I assumed they were at least hybrids. TBH I have never been a fan of BA...

Based on limited auditions, I'd add the Chord SPM 1200 Mk. II to this list as well.
Full-sounding SS amps (besides Pass)
@sufentanil ah yes, McCormack, have heard that one and would concur. Also have heard that about Plinius SA-100 but I hear the newer models are not as juicy? Or perhaps it's the integrateds that are a little cool.@twoleftears adding Sugden to the l...

Another example: original Bryston B60, circa 2000. Listening to it now (with some light mods) and while it isn't the last word in transparency, the lower midrange is really lovely. I haven't heard the newer models but I hear they are leaner-sounding.

Haven't listened myself, but have heard Belles falls in this category.
Dynaudio Special Forty vs. Contour 20
@james_w514 unrelated question, how do you find the Bryston Cubed amps? I'm considering requesting one for review, but not sure which one to try. I've heard that the 2.5 is the sweetest of the bunch but I'm tempted by more power...
