Vandersteen users: How low can you go with tubes
I have the Vandies, and have heard them driven perfectly well by a Audio Research VT-55. For what it's worth!
power cables for Cary 303/100 cdp/Pass X
I just got a Cary 303/200 and a dealer who carries both Cary and Pass recommended I try Harmonic Technology and Synergistic cables and power cords. Haven't had the chance to do so yet... but good luck!
Tenor 75/Joule Electra Grand Marquis
I used to live in Iowa, so I sympathize: the high-end picking are slim (although I gather they've improved somewhat in recent years). If I were contemplating this kind of purchase, I'd do what I did years ago: take a trip to Minneapolis and/or Chi...
Recommended classical guitar CDs?
My two favorites, for recording quality and performances, are the Assad brothers playing baroque transcriptions on Nonesuch, and the astonishing versions of Bach's Violin Sonatas and Partitas played by Paul Galbraith on Delos.
Power amp for Sonus Faber Grand Piano Home?
I auditioned the Grand Piano Homes using my Audio Research 100.2 amplifier. It was a wonderful combination, and now that the 100.2's been discontinued, they're available both new and used a very reasonable discounts.
CAL's Aria mk III vs SONY's XA777ES
So I'm not the only one-- I've been looking to replace a CAL Tercet Mk III from 1991, and have gone through Arcam and Meridian, and listened to Linn's Genki and Ikemi-- and only the Cary series of players is in the same musical ballpark as the CAL...
Power Cord Recommendations for Cal Audio CL2500
My CAL Tercet loved the Shunyata Black Mamba. The Van den Hul Mainsstream would also be worth trying.
Vandy 2CE S or Gershman's Cameleon: High-End Spks?
Vandersteens are popular (I have a pair) because they're terrific value for the money, because they sound better than a lot of designs that are far more expensive, because they sound exceedingly neutral and natural, and because they will reveal im...
How do you troubleshoot a pair of Aerial 10Ts?
You need a powerful solid-state amplifier, preferably at least 200 watts per channel. The Aerials need a lot of power.
XLR wiring question?
Huh-- does that apply to Van den Hul the Second? I use it on occasion: should I be switching one end of the L/R connectors?
Changing from RCA to balanced- possible?
Another more complicated (but sonically better way): get a (used) Audio Research BL1 single-ended to balanced interface. It requires two sets of cables (one RCA set from the output of the single-ended component to the box, one XLR set from the bal...
Unsettled and considering changing stuff
Some ideas: improve the phono stage; try a better grade of Transparent speaker cables, or try a different brand (Transparent might sound somewhat slow with the BAT); most, radically, try some different speakers. I have't been impressed with the Ma...
Anyone familiar with the None-Felt Turntable Mat?
Yep. In every particular.
Under Appreciated Jazz Piano Players
Virtually anyone who recorded a solo recital for Concord CDs in the Maybeck Recital series. Largely terrific performances, in splendid sound. Look for all 40-odd of them... many have been remaindered recently. With perhaps one exception, all of th...
How to isolate aurios to reduce glare?
First, you might want to reconsider the glass shelf, which might be exacerbating the problem. Then: there are several routes you can go to isolate the bottom of a CDP from the tops of Aurios, and it'll be a matter of taste and what works for you. ...
