Beethoven String Quartets: DDD recordings.... In DDD, I'm partial to the Tokyo. The Emerson are terrific, but very high energy, and to my mind less idiomatic in Beethoven.
vandersteen 3a sig ss vs. tube You might want to try an Audio Research 100.2 or 150.2 solid state amp... see if you like it: I've heard the 3a's with the 100.2, and use the amp with my 2 CE Sigs... my dealer says the 150.2's even better, but I haven't had the chance to hear it.
who is this hilariously funny orchestra? It could be the Portsmouth Sinfonia...
Srangest ,most out there sounding music Judy Dunaway: music for rubbed balloons. No kidding! There's a recording of her work on CRI, I believe..
Audio Research Sp16 tube upgrade I can't help you on NOS choices-- but the use of tube dampers is strictly to taste. I'd imagine the SP16, given its base sound, benefits from dampers-- but you might prefer it otherwise. Better than the dampers provided by Audio Research are the d...
Floating ground: Any danger? Alternatives? My dealer suggested to leave My Hydra and my preamp grounded, and float the ground on all of the other equipment. Apparently having one ground to the wall and one to a processor in a system all linked together is sufficient.
beethoven string quartets I surely like the Tokyo: you can't go wrong with that set. But the classic set is the Vegh. Somewhat older recording, somewhat dry sound, but the set to have if you're having only one.
Small speakers matching with Audio Research CL-30? I'd look at ProAcs, Sonus Fabers, and Aerials.
Vandersteen question My Vandersteen dealer runs his 3a Sigs with an Audio research tube amp that puts out 50-60 wpc. Sounds perfectly fine and loud enough for me.
What tonearms $1500 work well with the Linn? With a Linn and $1500 to spend you should look for a used Ekos.
Best interconnects for audio research I've heard Proacs with Audio Research electronics using Transparent Reference interconnects (and Kimber speaker cable). Sublime sound. You can find used Trasparent Ref with XL on Audiogon if you're patient, although XLR costs extra and might run o...
XRCD If you could order 3, Which ones? Reiner/ Bartok Concerto for OrchestraElla Fitzgerald and Joe Pass-- Take Love EasyPop's up to you!
What steps forward were actually steps backward? Vader007, I would think the Synergistic Designer Reference cables would be way too bright with your set-up (unless that's what you like!). In my limited experience, if that's what you're hearing, you might want to at least try the Synergistic Reso...
What mat for MMF-5 ? Try Herbie's Audio Labs Way Excellent Turntable Mat. I prefer it even to the Extreme Phono Donut Mat, which has rightly gotten a lot of positive attention.
Norah Jones on Bluenote?? I don't think Norah Jones is jazz, even vaguely. I do see the appeal, in a mild sort of way, however. More importantly, her success will bankroll Blue Note in their more traditional ventures, just as the monster success of Keith Jarrett's "Koln Co... |
