Favorite Ella Recordings
Without question, the two best Ella CDs available (particularly if you hate the orchestral backgrounds of the Songboooks) are "Pure Ella" (a 1950s classic, Ellis Larkin on piano as the only accompaniment) and the XRCD of the later Pablo session "T...
Vandersteen 2CE Signature dimensions
The stands to the 2CE Signatures extend 5" behind the base of the speaker-- I just measured mine! I find that 16" from the back wall is the magic number in my room for the 2CE Sigs, and I've read of others with the same experience...
Whats the best platform/support for Hydra
I got a PolyCrystal stand from the Cable Company (www.fatwyre.com) that's exactly the right diminsions as the Hydra. You might want to contact them and ask them about it (or a comparable stand; PolyCrystal has been known to change their sizes).
Only for owners of ARC SP 16
Audio Research equipment is generally highly revealing of power cord changes. Transparent cords tend to be dark; in my limited experience of having an SP16 in my system on trial it's also somewhat rolled off and "tubey", at least in comparison to ...
Vandersteen-like "In-between" speakers
One more thought: check out the Aerial 7b. Voiced not dissimilarly from the Vandersteens, but more detailed and stronger bass response (if arguably a tad less smooth and coherent). A fine speaker, although you do pay for the woordworking...
Vandersteen-like "In-between" speakers
I've just heard that Vandersteen is showing a new speaker model called the Quatro at CES, price point to be around $6500 (between the 3a Sigs and the 5s). There was a small discussion on them on Audio Asylum the other day, and a picture has been p...
The best tubes for ARC LS16 MKII
Can someone clarify? Doesn't the Mk II use 6h30s? Are there NOS or other alternatives to the stock tubes AR provides?
Best sounding player under $3500 Used ?
I assume by "player" you mean CD. Don't know if it's the best, but lots like the Cary 306/200, which you can find used for around $2600-2700. Very "warm and analog."
tube upgrade for first sound
I've very much enjoyed the Russian 6H23s I've tried from the Cable Company in my Audio Research SP9 Mk III preamp. They stomp the stock Sovteks into the ground. Worth a try.
How many spare cables and power cords do you have?
I try to keep it down. Right now I have three extra power cords and two extra sets of interconnects (and perhaps one too many power conditioners). I assume that's on the modest end of this pursuit!
Powercord recommendations on CAL 15 & Rogue 66/99
My CAL Tercet loved the Shunyata Black Mamba. Van den Hul Mainsstream was good, too.
Recommendation - Complete Beethoven Sonatas
Another nod for Goode. Although in ultimate terms I prefer Schnabel and Kempf, the fidelity is pretty low on those (1930's and mid-50s respectively) I admire Brendel a great deal, but his set(s) are pretty rigorous and intellectual-- not perhaps t...
Renting out your audio room
I'd like to know why no one offers a mail-order high-end audio for rent business, comparable to the Cable Company's treatment of audio cables. It would be great to pay a deposit 5% of the cost of a component towards an eventual purchase in order t...
What is your favorite Wagner’s “Ring”?
For overall performances and spectacular recording, the Solti, hands down. For best possible conducting and vocals, recording quality be damned, Furtwangler at La Scala in the early 1950s.
Album which you have listened to most?
Rodrigo, Concierto de Aranjuez, Yepes/Argento, DeccaDuke Ellington small group songbook, Ella Fitzgerald, VerveBrahms, Serenade in A, Boult, EMIBen Webster, everything. My wife: October Nights, Stone Soup (little known, and a remarkable audiophile...
